Isles TV

From the network's release:

<<New York, NY, September 21, 2010 – MSG is proud to announce that the four-time
Stanley Cup champion New York Islanders return to MSG Plus (and MSG Plus 2 and
MSG 2) for 81 telecasts this season.  A complete schedule is below.

The Islanders open their regular season at home against the Dallas Stars on
Saturday, October 9 at 7:00 p.m. on MSG Plus. MSG Plus will televise a half-hour
pre-game show, "Islanders Game Night," and most games will be followed by a
post-game show. The popular "Hockey Night Live!" weekly roundup show returns for
its fourth season on MSG and MSG Plus, airing after Saturday night games
throughout the season.

Howie Rose is serving his 16th season as play-by-play announcer with new
full-time analyst and Islanders legend Butch Goring. Deb Placey will return as
the home host/reporter and Rob Carlin will again handle the host/reporter duties
for Islanders road games. Stan Fischler will serve as a league correspondent for
all Islanders home games. Islanders hockey on MSG Plus is produced by Jim
Daddona, directed by Larry Roth, with Bob de Poto serving as senior coordinating
producer. Dan Ronayne serves as executive vice president and general manager for
MSG Networks, and Jeff Filippi is senior vice president and executive producer.

MSG Networks will continue its unprecedented commitment to the NHL, as MSG and
MSG Plus will combine to telecast more than 300 live Rangers, Devils, Islanders,
and Sabres games during the 2010-2011 hockey season.

Isles pre-season telecasts

While MSG is not scheduled to carry an Isles pre-season game, NHL Network will
have at least 2 -- one live and one on tape.

Wed, 9/29 New York Islanders vs. Philadelphia Flyers 7:00 PM LIVE
Wed, 9/29 Calgary Flames vs. New York Islanders (Saskatoon, SK) 4:00 AM *
(This is 4AM ET on Thursday, September 30)

The NHL's release also notes that NHL Network is supposed to cover the Isles
game in Quebec City against Montreal on October 2nd. However, that game is not
listed among the 35 games that will be shown on NHLNetwork US. With the Isles
also playing at home that night, it seems likely that most of the Islander stars
will play at LeColiseum and not at LeColisee (now the Colisee Pepsi).

MSG Tweets

In addition to Botta and Katie, MSG's Rob Carlin is at Isles practice today.
You'll be seeing Isles preview material as part of "Hockey Night Live" -- you
can follow Rob's tweets @RobCarlinMSG .

He talked with Moulson today. Moulson told him the Isles rivalry with the
Rangers is "like war". (Isles) can't lose because they are representing Isles
fans. (Isles host Rangers 3 weeks from today! Won't be long now!)

Subject: Twitter trivia

Over the past few weeks, the Isles (@NYislanders) have been running a few of my
trivia questions through a contest on Twitter.

Here are a few of the recent ones:

1. Trent Hunter has recorded 225 points as an Islander, most among current
#Isles. Who's second?

2. What is the link between Dwayne Roloson and baseball player Al Weis?

3. Hunter's #Isles debut was in the '02 playoffs vs. #Leafs. Who's the 1 player
to appear in an Isles playoff game but never a reg season game?

4. What #Isles Cup Winner is exactly five years younger than teammate Mike
Bossy?

NESN: Rule limits fighting in Isles/B's rookie games

The Isles and Bruins will play two rookies games in the Gah-den this week.

Don't expect a lot of fisticuffs. NESN explains:

<<nesn.com

New League Restrictions Limit Fighting in NHL Rookie Games
by Douglas Flynn on Sep 15, 2010 1:40:57 AM

WILMINGTON, Mass. -- There was a time when an NHL rookie game would guarantee a
donnybrook or two. Or more likely 12. Gloves would litter the ice and it would
be standing-room only in the penalty boxes as youngsters did whatever they
could to make an impression on management.

Those days are largely gone in the kinder, gentler NHL of the new millennium,
but just in case, the Bruins and New York Islanders have instituted
restrictions on fighting in the rookie games at the Garden Wednesday and
Thursday night.

"Our fighting rule is pretty good," said Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli.
"I don't think you'll see a lot of fights. Two fights [and] you're out of the
two games."

That could come as a disappointment to many fans, as well as some players still
trying to carve out a niche in the game with their physical play.

"It's been a long summer," said forward Lane MacDermid. "When you're playing
shinny you can't really lay the body out. I'm a little anxious, so that should
be good."

MacDermid led Providence with 21 fighting majors last year in his first
professional season, and it can be tough to show all of his attributes in
practice, where beating up his future teammates tends to be frowned upon.

"Obviously, sometimes practice drills don't show what you bring to the game,
the little nuances of your game that you're better off showing in a game
situation," said Providence coach Rob Murray, who is overseeing the on-ice
sessions of this week's rookie camp. "A guy like Dermie [MacDermid] I'm sure is
ready to bang some bodies out there and get 'er going. He's a guy that's a
physical player and for the most part within your own practices with your own
teammates there's a little bit of body contact, but not what you're looking for
in a game."

MacDermid is capable of handling the rough stuff, but he doesn't mind getting a
chance to show what he can do with the gloves on as well.

"I'm trying to mold myself into being a power forward," said MacDermid.
"Obviously I play a physical game, but I'm trying to expand my skillset so I
can play a bigger role on the team.

"I'm just going to try to play my game and if something arises obviously I'll
take that opportunity, but I'm not going to go crazy out there," added
MacDermid. "If it comes, it comes."

And it could come if anyone on the Islanders takes any liberties with Tyler
Seguin and Co., as MacDermid knows it will be his responsibility to handle such
situations.

"We've got a lot of skilled guys on the team, so part of my role is to protect
them if guys are taking shots at them," said MacDermid.
Times have changed in the NHL, but high-profile rookies like Seguin will still
get challenged until they establish themselves in the league. But knowing guys
like MacDermid have his back allows Seguin to feel free from the need to drop
the gloves himself very often.

"That hasn't crossed my mind," said Seguin when asked by one reporter if he
thought he would have to prove himself physically. "I'm going out there to work
my hardest. If that comes and I need to stand up for myself, obviously I'm
gonna.

"But if it's Chris Pronger coming up to me I might have to turn it down," added
Seguin with a smile.>>

Grossman on Isles and Kovy

Jay Grossman is a former college classmate of mine-- he was interviewed by yahoo
and had this to say about the Isles:

On reports of an offer from the Islanders: "They inquired. They called, we had
some discussions. They had to get to the floor, obviously. We had a number of
calls of that type of nature, with teams that would have been interested if we
were interested in a specific kind of contract. Our objection going in was to
put Kovy in one place for the remainder of his career."

Potvin to Sens

<<
Potvin joins Sens broadcast team

By BRUCE GARRIOCH, QMI Agency

The Senators have drafted an all-star defenceman from Ottawa into the broadcast
booth.

Former New York Islanders great Denis Potvin, an Ottawa native, has signed to
take over the job as the Senators' colour analyst after Garry Galley agreed to

a three-year deal with Hockey Night in Canada.

Potvin, let go by the Florida Panthers last summer for financial reasons, is
highly-regarded as one of the top analysts in the game. He is expected to call

all 52 broadcasts on Sportsnet this season.

<<

While finances were a part of Potvin leaving the Panthers, I think that an equal
part was his refusal to live in Florida throughout the summer. Good luck to
Denny.
