World Junior Stunner

If you ever want to get a quick feel on how different parts of the world are
viewing the headlines of the day, the Newseum's front page collection is a great
place to start:

On the front cover of today's papers across Canada are headlines such as
"Stunned", "Hockey's Cruel Heartache", "Shattered", "Debacle on Ice", and "Oh,
No Canada". The National Globe and Mail has a picture with the caption "Our
period of Discontent".

Russia's comeback from a 3-0 deficit is the stuff of legends in one part of the
world and heartbreak in another. Former Isles draft pick (and footnote, in the
Pat LaFontaine trade) Dave Cameron, Canada's coach, goes from being a a
potential hot choice for an NHL job to the one that let it get away in a matter
of minutes.. 20 minutes.

Calvin deHaan finishes the toruney with 5 assists; he was +2. Casey Cizikas goes
2-1-3 in the tourney and was +1. deHaan will return to the Oshawa Generals, who
are battling for 1st place in their division and Cizikas will return to the
league leading Missisauga St. Michael's Majors.

If this had happened to the US last night, relatively few Americans would have
cared. But it happened to Canada; so I'm sure a large portion of a country felt
like I did on that dreadful night in the spring of 1978 - when Lanny McDonald
eliminated the Islanders in Game 7.
