John Tavares is on his way to leading the Islanders in scoring for the second
straight season. With 60 points, he has a 12 point lead on PA Parenteau and
Michael Grabner. No Islander forward has ever led the team in scoring in each
of his first two NHL seasons. (Denis Potvin led the team in scoring in each of
his first 4 seasons.)
His 34 assists are the most by an Isles forward since Alexi Yashin had 38 in
2005-06; he is the first Islander in four seasons to reach 60 points. He is
averaging .85 points per game -- if he can improve that slightly he would have
the highest point per game for an Islander forward since Yashin averaged .96
points per game in the 2001-02 season.
Tavares has gone three games without a point; he has had only one streak longer
than that this season, going five games in early December. Those were the last
five games of the Isles 5-18-5 start.
