Montoya to be Group 6 UFA

The Isles have used 6 goaltenders this season, and Al Montoya's numbers are as
good as any of them:

Al Montoya 8 4 4 2.35 .923
Kevin Poulin 4 2 1 2.44 .924
Dwayne Roloson 6 13 1 2.64 .916
Rick DiPietro 8 11 4 3.36 .889
Nathan Lawson 1 4 2 4.06 .893
Mikko Koskinen 2 1 0 4.33 .873

However, it appears that unless the Islanders re-sign him by July 1st, Montoya
will become an Unrestricted Free Agent under Group 6 of the Collective

Bargaining Agreement.

"These players, whose contracts have expired, are age 25 or older, have
completed three or more professional seasons, and (i) in the case of a player

other than a goaltender, have played less than 80 NHL games (regular-season and
playoff), or (ii) in the case of a goaltender, have played less than 28 NHL

games (regular-season and playoff)." Montoya has appeared in 22 NHL games (17
for the Isles and 5 for Phoenix). However, a goaltender must play at least 30

minutes in a game for the game to count towards the total. While all 17 games
he has played for the Isles count, only four of the 5 games he played for
Phoenix do.

With only six games left for the Islanders this season, Montoya will not reach
the 28 game mark.

I think Montoya's earned another contract with the Isles. The question is, with Lawson, Poulin, and DP in the mix, would the Isles want another goalie? And, would he have to sign a two-way contract? After his performance with the Isles, would any team give him a one-way contract on such a small sample size?

I so hope they keep him for another year. Poulin is awesome but so young and so is Mikko. Not sure if Lawson will be back considering he is inconsistent in the NHL games. Give me the Big Cubano!
