The Skinny:
Kyle Okposo scored his 1st two goals of the season as he recorded his 4th career two-goal game, and first at the Coliseum. It's the first time since 1993 that an NHL game has been tied 1-1 within the first 37 seconds, and the first time since last March 4 that each team scored on their first shot on goal.  The Flyers have been outscored 8-2 in the first period of their last three games.

As Seen on MSG+
Okposo and Grabner each had three points in the first period; it was the first time two Isles had three 1st period points since January 30, 2002 at Madison Square Garden.  In that game, Alexei Yashin had a first period hat trick and Mariusz Czerkawski had three assists.

No Shot on First Shot
Meszaros' goal marked the second straight game that the Isles allowed a goal on the opposition's first shot on goal.  It's the 5th time this season they have allowed a goal on the first shot (Pavelski/SJ, Pouliot/BOS, Rome/VAN, Crosby/PIT, Meszaros/PHI).  The Isles are 0-3-2 when allowing a goal on the first shot and 1-9-2 when allowing the first goal.

Early Goal For, Too!
Okposo's first goal was the 2nd earliest goal that the Isles have scored this season, coming one second later than Tavares' goal vs Tampa Bay on October 13th.  It's the third time the Isles have scored in the first 61 seconds (Mark Streit @ Florida on October 22nd).

Hurting His Cy Young Chances
Michael Grabner had a goal and two assists, giving him six goals and four assists on the season.  It was Grabner's first multi-assist game as an Islander (he also had one as a Canuck).

Briere, Again
Briere now has 17 goals and 18 assists in 36 career games against the Isles.  It's Briere's third game-winner against the Isles; he also had the winner in the first game the Isles played after the lockout in 2005.

Stopping Read
The Isles stopped Matt Read's goal scoring streak at five games.  Only four NHL players (including Michael Grabner) have had six-game scoring streaks since the start of last season.

Home and Road
The Islanders are 5-10-4 overall and 5-5-2 at home.  The Isles are 0-2-1 in their last three games.
The Flyers are 12-6-3 overall and 7-2-1 on the road.  The win breaks a two-game losing streak for the Flyers.

In the Nets
Rick DiPietro made 29 saves for the Isles.  He is 2-2-3 on the season with a 3.44 GAA and an 88.5 save percentage.
Ilya Bryzgalov made six saves in the first period.  Sergei Bobrovsky came in and blanked the Isles the remainder of the way, making 23 saves.  Bobrovsky improves to 32-14-9 in his career, including 6-0-0 against the Isles.

Power Plays
The Islanders and Flyers were both 1-4 on the power play.   The Isles are 3-30 in the last ten games on the power play and 25-34 in the same stretch on the penalty kill.   The Flyers goal flipped back and forth between being a power play goal and not.  Steve Staios still had one second to serve according to the scoreboard clock, but the goal occurred exactly 2 minutes after the penalty (which would not be a power play goal).  Eventually, the time of the goal was adjusted by one second to make it a power play tally.

Lots of Blocks
The Isles blocked 25 shots, with MacDonald (7) and Staios (5) responsible for nearly half of them.

They Said It
Kyle Okposo on the first period: "We just came out and played hockey…Every line was going, we had some hits, we killed some penalties and we had a couple power plays that gave us some momentum."

They Tweeted It
@AlanHahn "Capuano was pleased with Okposo's game (obviously); DiPietro was loss for words (rare) for those ridiculous bounces that led to goals"

The Crooked Numbers
Andrej Mezaros, who scored 18 seconds in, was +3; Matt Read was +2.  Brayden Coburn had two assists but was -2; Jaromir Jagr was also -2 before leaving due to a lower body injury.   Besides Grabner and Okposo's three-point games, no Isle had multiple points or multiple +/-.

The Hit Leader
Matt Martin added 2 hits to maintain his league lead over Minnesota's Cal Clutterbuck.  Martin has 88 hits while Clutterbuck has 79. The Isles have played two fewer games than the Wild.

Leading Ice Men
Andrew MacDonald led all players with 7:22.  Coburn led the Flyers with 24:07.

Third Periods
The Isles have been outscored 15-1 in the third period over the last eight games (including three empty net goals against).  The Isles have been outscored 26-8 overall in the third period (20-6 if you exclude empty nets).  In the first two periods, the Isles have been outscored 35-30.

Overtime is Not Our Time
The Isles are now 0-0-4 in games that have gone beyond 60 minutes, losing three times in overtime and once in a shootout.  Going back to last season, the Isles are winless in their last five extra time games.

88 to Go
The Isles have scored 9,912 goals in their history (excluding 39 shootout winners), leaving the club 88 shy of 10,000.

.500 for Second Time in a Long Time
The overtime loss leaves the Islanders' all-time record at NHL .500 (1318-1318-425 in 3,061 games).   The Isles' all-time record has been .500 or better since they were 178-178-83 on January 16, 1978.

Still Searching
Blake Comeau and Mike Mottau are the only Islander regulars (besides Nino, who has played only three games) who have yet to record a point.

Into the Record Books
Meszaros' goal was the 13th straight allowed by the Isles, matching the club record set February 6-10, 1973. The Isles scoreless streak ended at 142:22.  The club record is 186:31, set in 2006-07.
38 in 19
The Isles have scored 38 goals in the first 19 games, which is their fewest goals thru 19 games in club history.  The Isles have scored 20 goals in their five wins (4.00 per game) and 18 goals in their other 14 games (0-10-4; 1.29 per game).

Fewest Goals, First 19 Games
  • ·         38 – 2011-12
  • ·         40 – 2010-11
  • ·         41 – 1999-2000
  • ·         42 – 2000-2001

In the Circle
The Islanders won 31 of 62 (50%) face-offs. It was the second straight game that the Isles won exactly 50% of the draws.  John Tavares won 14 of 25. Tavares, who won 47.5% of his draws as a rookie and 52.5% last season, has won 53.0% of his draws so far this year.

Welcome Back Haley
Micheal Haley was recalled Tuesday from Bridgeport and played 5:08 in his first NHL game of the season.

Missing Men
Brian Rolston (under the weather), Marty Reason and Nino Niederreiter were scratched. Marc Eaton, Evgeni Nabokov, Al Montoya and Mark Katic are on injured reserve.  The Isles have lost 69 man-games to injury so far this season.

Ironmen
Matt Moulson, the Isles' reigning ironman, has played in all 183 games since joining the team. Travis Hamonic has now played 81 NHL games (all consecutive); he has the longest consecutive game streak on defense for the Isles.

Season Series Stats
The Flyers lead the season series one game to none (two points to one).  The teams will next meet January 12th at the Coliseum. The Isles are 1-8-3 in their last 12 at home vs Philadelphia.

Happy Anniversary
Two years ago tonight: November 23, 2011.   Dwayne Roloson set a club-record with 58 saves and Josh Bailey had the winning goal in overtime as the Islanders defeated Toronto 4-3.
Overall, the Isles are 6-5-6 on this date including a 8-8 tie with Minnesota in 1982 – one of two 8-8 games that the Isles have played in their history.

On The Farm
Bridgeport is 9-7-2-0 and is just one point out of first place in the Northeast Division.  The Sound Tigers are off until Friday, when they host the Connecticut Whale.  They will have reinforcements in the nets as Anders Nilsson was returned to Bridgeport after the game.

Third Jerseys
For the second time in their history, the Isles debuted a third jersey on a Thanksgiving Eve.  They also did so in 2002.  The Isles are 0-0-1 in their third jerseys this seaon.

Up Next
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 25TH NEW JERSEY AT ISLANDERS 3:00PM
[MSG+ (Islanders Game Night at 2:30pm), WRHU (88.7FM)]
For the first time this season, the Isles will play on back-to-back days as the Isles begin a home-and-home series with New Jersey on Friday afternoon at the Coliseum.  The Isles will have Al Montoya available as he was removed from injured reserve following tonight's game.
The Devils won the season series last year four games to two (and eight points to six, as the Isles went 2-2-2).  The Isles won the first two; Rick DiPietro had a Black Friday shutout and the Isles blew the Devils out 5-1 in December, but New Jersey won the final four, with Marty Brodeur earning all four victories.  This is the first of six meetings this season.
The Isles have won their last three Black Friday home games, defeating Pittsburgh in 2006 and 2009 and the Devils last season.
