The most penalized player and most penalized goalie in Islander history share this anniversary date.
61 Years Ago today (1950)- Billy Smith was born in Perth, Ontario.
On Smith's 39th birthday, 22 years ago today (1989), Mick Vukota recorded a club record 42 penalty minutes in a 7-2 loss to the Devils.
Vukota received a minor penalty in the first period and a misconduct for elbowing goalie Chris Terreri before the 2nd period even began.
A fight with Ken Daneyko earned him another five minutes early in the third, but it was a fight with Jamie Huscroft that earned him an additional 25 penalty minutes later in the session (fighting, misconduct, game misconduct). Linesman Leon Stickle (remember that name?) was injured breaking up that fracas.
No player in the NHL has recorded 42 penalty mintues in a game since David Koci did so for Chicago in 2007.
Forever1940 is the nom de plume of Eric Hornick, statistician on Islander home telecasts since 1982. Visit my blog: NYISkinny.com and follow me on Twitter @ehornick
