I mentioned earlier that Nelson was the Red Baron® WCHA Offensive Player of the Week but a further look at his numbers shows that the 30th overall pick in 2010 has made great strides his sophomore year.
Playing on a team with 15 NHL drafted players, Nelson has already eclipsed his scoring totals from a year ago:
Fr: 42 games: 8-13-21
So: 16 games 14-8-22
His team is 8-7-1 overall and 6-6-0 in league play, but its hard to imagine where they'd be without Nelson.
His 14 goals and 22 points have come on only 49 team goals; in league play he has points on 18 (12-6-18) of the Sioux's 37 goals this season. All 9 of his PP goals have come in WCHA play.
In league play, Nelson leads the entire WCHA in goals (12), power play goals (9), is 2nd in PP points (10) and is 3rd in overall points (18). Nelson just turned 20 years old in October.
The Isles certainly hope his career progresses the way some other UND players have at the pro level: Guys like Oshie, Parise, Stafford, Toews and Zajac to name a few.
