I noted in The Skinny early this morning:
In the Circle
The Islanders started strong, but ended up winning only 28 of 63 (44%) face-offs. John Tavares won 12 of 21 but the other Islanders won only 16 of 42.
A period-by-period review adds a little color to the comment.
Thru 2 periods, Tavares had won 9 of 14, so that means he won 3 of 7 in the third period. The Isles as a team won 23 of 40 thru 2 periods, meaning they won 5 draws in the third period and lost 18!. Other than Tavares, the Isles won 2 third period draws and lost 14.
Josh Bailey had a particularly rough third period in the circle. Bailey won 6 of 9 through two periods, but lost all seven draws he took in the third.
Frans Nielsen won only 4 of 16 in the game.
The Islanders are now 22nd in the NHL in face-off percentage; they were 19th a season ago.
