"The Skinny"

 By Eric Hornick
Game 48
Leafs 4, Isles 3 (OT)
PA Parenteau scored an unassisted goal off a fluke bounce to tie the game with 13 seconds to play but Clarke MacArthur scored the winning goal at 2:06 of overtime and Jonas Gustavsson made 29 saves as the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Isles 4-3 in front of 10,888 at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.  The overtime loss drops the Isles ten points out of 8th place at the All-Star Break.

The Skinny:
John Tavares recorded 20 goals for the third consecutive season.  Bailey's shorthanded goal was his second in four games; he had only one in his career prior to last week.  Mikhail Grabovski's three assists matched his career high. Jake Gardiner's goal was his first in the NHL (42nd game). Ron Wilson coached his 1,386th NHL game, tying Mike Keenan for 5th place on the all-time list.

The Shots
The Isles outshot Toronto 8-4 in the first period and 12-5 in the third.  Each team had ten shots in the second period and two shots in overtime. For the game, the Isles outshot Toronto 32-21. The Leafs would have had more shots on goal had the Islanders not blocked a season-high 30 shots.

Home and Road
The Islanders are 19-22-7 overall and are 11-11-4 at home.  The Isles are 5-2-1 over their last eight on Coliseum ice.
The Leafs are 25-19-5 overall and 11-1-1 on the road.

In the Nets
Al Montoya made 17 saves in his first appearance since being injured in Winnipeg on December 20th. He is 6-5-4 on the season.
Jonas Gustvasson made 29 saves for Toronto as he improved to 16-10-0.

Leaning on #91
John Tavares has 49 points (20-29-49) on 110112 Islander goals this season (44%).  No Islander since Zigmund Palffy has recorded points on over 40% of the team's goals in a complete season.

Power Plays
The Islanders did not have a power play for the second straight game and third time this season; the Leafs were 0-2 and allowed Bailey's shorthanded goal..  The Isles entered the game 6th in the league with the extra man.  The Isles are 3-11 in the last five games on the power play and 9-33 in the last 13 games on the power play.
The Isles have killed 16-16 over the last seven games, 36-37 (97.3%) over the last 15 games and 40-42 (95.2%) over the last 19 games, dating back to December 16th.  While the Isles have not allowed a power play goal against in seven games, Toronto has not allowed a power play goal in 2012, killing 16 opponent power plays. The Leafs have been shorthanded one time or less in seven of those 11 games.

Powerless
The Islanders are the first team since the Phoenix Coyotes (11/10/10-11/12/10) to not have a single power play in consecutive games.

They Said It
PA Parenteau on his tying goal: "It was a real lucky bounce. K ind of like their go-ahead goal, same type of thing. We'll take it."
Josh Bailey: ""To go two games without a penalty?  I don't care how disciplined a team is, there's no way there is no penalties taken in two games. It's baffling. It's disheartening. We're pretty (ticked) off about it."

They Tweeted It
The Globe & Mail's James Mirtle (@mirtle): "Two games against the Isles, zero penalties against the Leafs. And there were definitely a few calls that could have been made tonight."

The Coach
"I liked our effort tonight.  I liked the way we responded after last night in Toronto."

Leading Ice Men
Andrew MacDonald led the Isles with 23:37; Dion Phaneuf led all players with 30:35.  Both players led their teams in both games of the back-to-back.

In the Circle
The Islanders won 24 draws; Toronto won 29. Jay Pandolfo won 4 of 5 for the Isles; Tyler Bozak won 11 of 16 for the Leafs. The Isles won only 10 of 32 draws in the first two periods but won 14 of 21 the rest of the way.

Heavy Hitters
The Islanders out-hit Toronto 32-24.  NHL hit leader Matt Martin led the Isles with six hits, raising his total to 216.  Martin, who had a club record 299 hits last season (hits have only been recorded since 2005-06) leads the NHL in hits by a wide margin.  He is on a pace to have 369 hits, which would be the highest total of any NHL player since the lockout.

Third Periods
The Isles were outscored 2-1 in the third period; the Isles have been outscored 53-34 overall in the third period (43-29 excluding empty nets). In the first two periods, the Isles have been outscored 83-77.

No, Canada
The Isles are 4-5-1 in games against Canadian opponents this season. The Isles have not had a power play in three games this season-all against Canadian opponents.

14 to Go
The Isles have scored 9,986 goals in their history (excluding 42 shootout winners), leaving the club 14 shy of 10,000.

2 Over .500
The Islanders remain two games over all-time NHL .500 (1332-1330-428 in 3,090 games).  The Isles have twice this season been one game below .500. Prior to this season, they had not been below NHL .500 since they were 177-178-83 prior to their victory on January 16, 1978.

Scoring
The Isles have scored 66 goals in their 19 wins (3.48 per game) and 46 goals in their other 29 games (0-22-7; 1.59 per game).  In their 22 regulation losses, the Isles have scored 27 goals (1.22 per game).

Head of the Class
John Tavares' goal gives him 170 career points; he is 24 points ahead of Matt Duchene for most among 2009 draft picks.  No other player in that draft is anywhere close. (Duchene suffered a knee injury in late December and has not yet resumed skating.)

Longest Point Streaks in NHL, Last 2 Seasons
·         Sidney Crosby, 25 games (11/5/10-12/28/10)
·         John Tavares, 12 games (12/29/11-1/21/12)
·         Ilya Kovalchuk 12 games (2/1/11-2/25/11)

Friends, Friends, Friends
Moulson has 22 goals this season; John Tavares has earned assists on 15 of them.  He has now been on-ice for 46 consecutive Moulson goals, earning assists on 31 of them, dating back to a Moulson goal on November 17, 2010 against Tampa.

MOT-ley Crew?
Since being put together 14 games ago, Matt Moulson is 6-9-15, Kyle Okposo is 5-7-12, and John Tavares is 8-14-22.

As Seen on MSG+
The Islanders are 16-11-3 when John Tavares records at least one point and 3-11-4 when he is held pointless.

20-20-20, 30-30-30?
Matt Moulson is the first Islander since Jason Blake (4 seasons: 2002-03 to 2006-07) to have at least three consecutive 20-goal seasons. He is eight goals away from a third consecutive 30-goal season; no Islander since Ziggy Palffy has accomplished that feat.  Moulson has 83 goals as an Islander – the most by any Islander since the lockout.

20-20-20 x 2
Tavares' goal gives him 20 goals on the season, marking the first time that the Islanders have had  the same two players (Moulson and Tavares) record at least twenty goals in three straight seasons since Mark Parrish and Jason Blake did so in 2002-03, 2003-04, and 2005-06.

Ironmen
Matt Moulson, the Isles' reigning ironman, has played in all 212 games since joining the team. Moulson's streak is the longest for an Islander since Richard Park played in 221 games from October 2006- February 2009.  Travis Hamonic has now played 110 NHL games (all consecutive); he has the longest consecutive game streak on defense for the Isles.

Moulson is one of only five Islanders in the last thirty years to appear in 200 consecutive games:
·         Matt Moulson 10/3/2009-CURRENT  212
·         Richard Park 10/5/2006 – 2/18/2009 221
·         Mariusz Czerkawski 12/23/99 – 4/14/2002 215
·         Bryan McCabe 10/7/95-2/4/98 220
·         Bryan Trottier 3/7/81- 1/12/84 219
Billy Harris played in the first 576 games in Islander history; that figure still stands as the club record.

Century Club
Hamonic is only the 8th defensemen in Islander history to play in 100 consecutive games and the first since Janne Niinimaa. He currently is tied for the 6th longest streak by a defenseman in Islander history.
1.     Denis Potvin 11/29/1975-1/17/1979  262
2.     Bryan McCabe 10/7/95-2/4/98 220
3.     Gerry Hart 3/1/75-11/22/77 198
4.     Janne Niinimaa 3/13/2004-1/7/2006 136
5.     Ken Morrow 3/1/1980-12/29/1981 134
6.     Travis Hamonic 11/24/10 – CURRENT 110
7.     Jean Potvin 10/23/75-1/2/77 110
8.     Kenny Jonsson 12/26/96-2/4/98 104
Like Hamonic, McCabe and Morrow's streaks came at the start of their NHL careers.  Both Niinimaa's streak and McCabe's streak encompassed their entire Islander careers.

Missing Men
Marty Reasoner (broken thumb) and Steve Staios (healthy) were scratched.  Mike Mottau, Rick DiPietro, and Mark Katic are on injured reserve.  The Isles have lost 235 man-games to injury so far this season.  Evegeni Nabokov dressed as the back-up goalie.

Season Series Stats
The Leafs lead the season series three games to none (and six points to one). The teams will complete the season series in Toronto on March 20th.  The Isles are 2-4-1 in the last seven against Toronto, but have not beaten Toronto in regulation since March 14, 2010.  The Leafs have won three straight against the Islanders in the same season for the first time since 1998-99.
Happy Anniversary
31 years ago tonight (1-24-81):  One word: Bossy. Mike Bossy scored his 49th and 50th goal in the final five minutes of the Islanders' 50th game of the season, joining Maurice Richard in the exclusive 50 in 50 club as the Islanders defeated Quebec 7-4.
All-time, the Isles are 9-6-3 on this date, having gone 0-2-1 since Rick DiPietro shutout Atlanta in 2004.
On The Farm
Bridgeport continues to be RED HOT.  The Sound Tigers have won eight straight and improved to 20-17-3-1 with a 2-1 win in Adirondack on Saturday.  Casey Cizikas scored his 10th goal and Anders Nilsson made 37 saves for his fourth straight win.  The Sound Tigers will look to tie the club record of 9, set in 2002 and equaled in 2003 when they host St. John's Wednesday; the hot streak has moved them within two points of first-place in the AHL Northeast Division.

Up Next
TUESDAY, JANUARY 31st    ISLANDERS AT CAROLINA 7:00PM
[MSG+ (Islanders Game Night at 6:30pm), WRHU (88.7FM)]
Following a week off for the All-Star Break, the Islanders return to action as they begin a two-game road trip in Carolina.  It's the third meeting of the month (and season) with the Islanders having won both of the prior match-ups, once in overtime and once in a shootout.  The Islanders will be looking for their first regulation win over Carolina since January 22, 2008; the Canes are 10-0-4 vs. the Isles since then.
