Ron Stewart has passed away in Ontario. He was 79.
Stewart won three Stanley Cups for the Maple Leafs before playing for five other teams, including the Islanders and Rangers.
For many years, he was the only player to be involved in a "trade" between the Islanders and Rangers, as the Isles acquired him for cash from the Blueshirts on November 14, 1972. Stewart, the first Islander to wear uniform #24, played 22 games for the Isles, scoring two goals and adding two assists. His final NHL goal, scored at the age of 40 years 136 days came on 11/25/72 @ Pittsburgh. He is to this day the only skater to appear in a game for the Islanders after his 40th birthday (and the oldest to ever score a goal).
He later coached the Rangers.
Stewart is the fourth member of the 1972-73 squad to pass away, predeceased by Bob Cook, Bryan Lefley and Brian Spencer and only the 6th former Islander to pass. (The others, Josef Vasicek and Alex Karpovtsev, were both killed in the tragic KHL crash this past September.)
