The Skinny:
Most Islander fans of a given age know that Ed Westfall scored the Isles' first goal; fewer will know that it was Morris Stefaniw who scored the game's first goal -- for Atlanta while shorthanded. You're a stats afficionado if you know that Stefaniw, who for a period and a half was the all-time leading goal scorer in Flames history, scored only one NHL goal in his career.
... Billy Harris scored the Isles 2nd goal. He would go on to score 28 in total after being the first-ever Islander draft pick...While Dynasty goalie Billy Smith served as the back-up, Gerry Desjardins made 19 saves for the Islanders... The Flames dominated the season series in 72-73, winning the first 4 games (twice by shutout) before the teams tied the season finale in Atlanta. ... Of course things got better for the Isles over the years; the Flames played their last game in Atlanta one month before the Islanders won their first Cup.
