Watching the Blackhawks celebrate their 2nd championship in 4 years it struck me that it is hard to believe that 30 years ago next week (October 11) , the Islanders raised their fourth consecutive Stanley Cup banner.

The Isles grabbed a 4-0 lead early in the third despite losing Mike Bossy to injury and defeated Los Angeles 5-2 that night.

As Kevin Dupont wrote in the Times:
<<
The banner that Potvin, the team captain, lifted to the ceiling was only part of the pre-game ceremonies. Bossy skated onto the ice with his Lady Byng Trophy, awarded for sportsmanship. Rollie Melanson flashed the Jennings Trophy that he and Smith shared as the top goaltending tandem. Smith had his Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player in the playoffs. And Bryan Trottier brought out the Prince of Wales Trophy, representing the conference championship. Potvin also brought out the Stanley Cup, which the Islanders have earned the last four years.

''That's something we'd like to see again,'' said Bourne. >>

Barring a tremendous run this spring, the banner-raising scene will never be repeated on Long Island.
