John Tavares broke a 2-2 tie late in the second period, and that proved to be the winning goal as the Islanders broke a three-game winless streak (0-2-1) and defeated the Edmonton Oilers 3-2, before a crowd of 10,608 at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The win extends the Isles' point streak on home-ice to 10 games (going back to last season), which matches the 1989-90 squad for the longest home-ice point streak in the post-Cup era.

The Skinny:
After being held pointless in the opener, John Tavares has a point in six straight games (he did not have a streak of six games all last season)… Six of the Isles' seven games this season have been decided by one goal (and ten of 11, going back to last season)…Taylor Hall's two goals in eight seconds broke Wayne Gretzky's club record of 2 goals in 9 seconds, set in 1983 on February 18, 1981 vs St. Louis (Elias Sports Bureau: Hall is also the youngest NHL player to score twice in 8 seconds or less since Deron Quint for Winnipeg did so in 4 seconds in 1995)...Mark Arcobello assisted on both Hall goals; his 8 assists lead all rookies…Matt Moulson played in his 300th game as an Islander…Michael Grabner now has more assists this season (6) than he did last season (5)…Edmonton coach Dallas Eakins played two games as an Islander in the 1999-2000 season…All five goals were scored by former first round draft picks, including three by first-overall picks Tavares and Hall.
Blackjack!
With his goal and assist tonight, John Tavares tied Ray Ferraro for 21st on the all-time Islander goal list and tied Steve Thomas and Jason Blake for 21st on the all-time Islander point list. Tavares is 26th on the all-time Islander assist list.
Mr. October?
Josh Bailey has seven points (2-5-7) in seven games this season. He had only 10 points in 31 career October games entering this season.
Fort Never Lose (in Regulation)
Going back to last season, the Isles are 7-0-3 in their last 10 regular season games at the Coliseum; this matches their longest point streak on home ice in the Post Cup era (9-0-1 from 12/16/89 to 1/28/90). The Isles last had a longer streak on home ice when they went 28-0-2 at the Coliseum from January 2 –October 30, 1982.

It's the first time since March 8-11, 2011 that the Isles have had at least 40 shots in consecutive games; it also matches their most shots in consecutive games since October, 2008. The 40 Isles shots were their most against Edmonton in the last 23 games between the teams. They also had 40 against the Oilers on February 16, 1993.
Home and Road
The Islanders are 3-2-2 overall, 2-0-2 at home and 1-2-0 on the road. Their six points in the first four home games matches their most in the first four games since they won their first four home games in 1984-85. The Isles are two games over NHL-.500 at home for the first time since the end of the 2009-10 season.
The Oilers are 1-6-1 overall, 1-2-0 at home and 0-4-1 on the road.
In the Nets
Evgeni Nabokov made 27 saves and improves to 3-1-2 on the season. Nabokov is 13-7-8 against the Oilers in his career.
Devan Dubnyk made 37 saves for Edmonton but falls to 0-4-1.
Power Plays
The Islanders were 1-5 while the Oilers were 0-3.
The Isles are 2-0-2 when they score at least one power play goal and 1-2-0 when they do not. All five of the Isles' PP goals this season have come at the Coliseum (5-16 at home, 0-7 on the road).
The Isles are 0-1-2 when they allow at least one power play goal and 3-1-0 when they do not. The Isles have killed 17 of 20 opponents' power plays this season.

The Coach
"Your goalie has to be your best player on the penalty kill. They seamed us quite a few times on that PK in the second period and had a couple one-timers. He made some big saves for us and really that was the turning point."

John Tavares has 258 career points; he is 58 points ahead of Matt Duchene for most among 2009 draft picks. No other player from that draft is anywhere close. Tavares also has more goals and more assists than any other player from that draft.

The Isles will face a former player as the opposition coach for the second straight game as they entertain Kirk Muller's Hurricanes in the third game of the four-game homestand. Carolina rallied to defeat Toronto on Thursday and is off to a 3-2-3 start.
This is the first of four meetings between the teams. The Isles defeated 13 of their 14 Eastern Conference rivals at least once last season, but were 0-2-1 against Carolina; however, their shootout loss in Raleigh on April 23rd clinched their first playoff spot since 2007.
The Isles are 3-8-1 in their last 12 at home against Carolina, but two of those wins have come in extra time, leaving Carolina 9-1-2 in those same twelve games.
The Isles will be looking to extend their Coliseum point streak to 11 games (dating back to last season). This would be their longest Coliseum point streak since they went 28-0-2 over the final 23 games of the 1981-82 season and the first seven games of the 1982-83 campaign.
