The Skinny: Carolina 1, Isles 0

"The Skinny"

By Eric Hornick

Game 16
Carolina 1, Isles 0

Kevin Poulin was nearly perfect, allowing only a first period deflection goal to Radek Dvorak.  However, Justin Peters was even better as the Carolina Hurricanes blanked the Islanders 1-0 before a crowd of 11,541 at PNC Center.  The Isles, who were in second place in the Metropolitan Division entering play on Tuesday, drop into a tie for 4th place with the Hurricanes.

The Scoring:

1st Period
06:39    CAR     Radek Dvorak (3) Deflected shot - ASST: Ron Hainsey (2)          1 - 0 CAR

2nd Period
NONE

3rd Period
NONE

The Skinny:
It was the first time this season that the Islanders were held to fewer than 2 goals, let alone shutout.  The Isles were the last team in the Eastern Conference to be held under two goals in any game this season… Radek Dvorak's goal was only the 5th scored by Carolina in the first period this season; he has 16 goals in 55 career games against the Isles…It was the 6th time the Hurricanes franchise has shutout the Isles – by six different goalies… The Isles, who were shutout by a 1-0 score only three times in their first 24 years of play, have been blanked 1-0 at least once in each of the last seven seasons… Aaron Ness, who appeared in nine games for the Isles in 2011-12 made his season debut.  The 23-year-old Ness was selected 40th overall in 2008 – 13 picks before Travis Hamonic...The Isles have gone 95:22 without a goal since Kyle Okposo scored in the second period on Tuesday.

The Shots:
Isles          5-7-9=21
Canes      11-7-6=24

The 45 combined shots were the fewest in any Islander game this season; it was also the fewest in any Hurricanes game this year.

Home and Road
The Islanders are 6-7-3 overall, 3-3-3 at home and 3-4-0 on the road.  The Isles are 0-2-0 on this road trip after winning two straight games to begin the month.
The Hurricanes are also 6-7-3 overall; like the Isles they are 3-3-3 at home and 3-4-0 on the road.

In the Nets
Kevin Poulin made 23 saves but falls to 1-3-0 on the season despite improving his save percentage to .918 and lowering his goals against average to 2.27.  Poulin has allowed just two goals in his last two starts.
Justin Peters made 21 saves for the Canes for his third career shutout and improves to 2-5-0 on the season; he has allowed just 1 goal in his last two games. Peters is 2-1-0 against the Isles, having allowed just 3 goals.

Power Plays
The Islanders were 0-3 while the Hurricanes were 0-2.  After scoring a power play goal in five straight games, the Isles have been held without a power play goal in their last six games.
The Isles are 3-1-3 when they score at least one power play goal and 3-6-0 when they do not.  The Isles are 1-5-2 when they allow at least one power play goal and 5-2-1 when they do not.

Three is a Magic Number
The Isles are 6-1-2 when they score at least three goals and are 0-6-1 when they do not.

Second to The One
Jack Capuano is now 2nd on the all-time Islander list in both games coached (211) and wins (90).

Most wins by Islander coaches:
1.     Al Arbour 740
2.     Jack Capuano 90
3.     Terry Simpson 81
4.     Peter Laviolette 77
5.     Ted Nolan 74

Most games coached (Islanders):
1.     Al Arbour 1,500
2.     Jack Capuano 211
3.     Mike Milbury 191
4.     Terry Simpson 187
5.     Scott Gordon 181

They Said It
"It was a little frustrating obviously. It was tough to get anything going and we had a few good opportunities that we didn't capitalize on early and their goalie got some confidence."

They Tweeted It
@StapeNewsday Poulin robs Bellemore with 3 mins to go, keeps it 1-0. Kid has had another excellent game, stopping 23 of 24 so far.

The Coach
"We had 19 missed shots after two periods. That's obviously something we have to work on. We have to hit the net and make second and third opportunities. We didn't do that."

Head of the Class
John Tavares has 266 career points; he is 56 points ahead of Matt Duchene for most among 2009 draft picks.  No other player from that draft is anywhere close.  Tavares also has more goals and more assists than any other player from that draft.

Leading Ice Men
Andrew MacDonald played 27:02 to lead the Isles for the 13th time this season. Justin Faulk led Carolina with 23:45.
The Isles are 5-6-2 when MacDonald leads them in ice-time and 1-1-1 when Hamonic leads them.

In the Circle
The Islanders won 14 of 37 draws.  Frans Nielsen won 5 of 9 to lead the Isles but the other Isles lost a combined 19 of 28; the Staal brothers won as many draws as the Isles did as Eric won 10 of 13 and Jordan won all four draws he took.

The Isles are 25th in the NHL in faceoff percentage, winning 45.7%.

Heavy Hitters
The Isles were out-hit 21-13.  Andrew MacDonald had three hits to lead the Isles.  Matt Martin fought Brett Bellomore; it was the Isles' 4th fight of the season: Boulton (2), Martin (2).

Martin leads the NHL with 71 hits.

Giving Up the Body
The Isles were credited with 16 blocked shots; Andrew MacDonald led the Isles with six, extending his NHL-leading total to 61.

All–time Winners
The Islanders fall to eight games over all-time NHL .500 (1377-1369-442 in 3,188 games).  The Isles have finished every season since 1977-78 above all-time NHL .500.

Ironmen
John Tavares is the reigning Islanders' ironman. Tavares has now played in 223 consecutive games, which is the second-longest streak for an Islander in the Post Cup era.
Frans Nielsen (146) and Kyle Okposo (129) also have streaks of at least 100 consecutive games.

Eric Boulton was also scratched. The Isles have lost 25 games this season due to injury.

The Isles have lost five straight to Carolina (0-4-1) and are 4-9-2 in their last fifteen games against the Hurricanes.

Happy Anniversary
40 years ago tonight: November 7, 1973.  Garry Howatt scored the tying goal late in the second period as the Islanders tied the Penguins 1-1 in Pittsburgh. It was the first Islander/Penguin game for Al Arbour and Denis Potvin.

Overall the Islanders are now 6-8-2 on this date.

On The Farm
Bridgeport is 3-5-1-0 on the season and are now off until Saturday, when they visit Hershey.

Up Next
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 9th —ISLANDERS AT COLUMBUS 7:00PM
[MSG+ (Islanders pre-game at 6:30pm), 88.7 WRHU-FM, 103.9 WRCN-FM]

After an off-day Friday, the road trip continues with the front-end of a set of back-to-backs as the Isles visit Columbus on Saturday.  It will be the second meeting of the season between the teams; the Blue Jackets rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Isles 3-2 in a shootout and spoil the Islander home opener.
The Isles have won only once in eight previous trips to Columbus, a 4-3 overtime win in March, 2010.  Josh Bailey scored the overtime goal and Dwayne Roloson made 34 saves for the victory.
