Isles 5, Detroit 4 (Shootout)
Casey Cizikas and Brock Nelson scored goals 80 seconds apart in the second period, sandwiching a Johan Franzen goal to get the Isles even through two periods; the Islanders then dominated the third period and the overtime but they eventually needed a shootout goal from Frans Nielsen to defeat the Detroit Red Wings 5-4 before a Military Appreciation Night crowd of 15,619 at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The Isles are 3-1-0 in their last four games on Coliseum ice.

Frans Nielsen is now 27/50 all-time in the shootout (54%). He is the only active player with at least 40 attempts to score at least 50% of the time. Nielsen is credited with his 13th game-deciding goal, tied for the most among all active players.
Of the Isles last 17 shootout wins, this is only the third to happen at home. The other 14 shootout wins in that stretch are all on the road.
The Skinny:
Casey Cizikas has scored in consecutive games after going 28 regular season games without a goal… Aaron Ness recorded his first NHL assist on a shot that was deflected by both Pierre-Marc Bouchard and Cal Clutterbuck. John Tavares scored an early goal on a deflection of a Josh Bailey shot and then set-up Brock Nelson's goal to extend his assist and point streaks to five games. Tavares is the only player in the NHL with an active assist streak of at least five games; it's the second time in his career he has had an assist in at least five straight games (6 games 12/29/2011-1/10/2012)... Tavares had a share of the NHL point lead for a brief time after he recorded his second point; Alex Steen added a goal later in the evening to take over the point lead with 26 points, one more than Tavares and Sidney Crosby… Bailey (1st point in 11 games) and Colin McDonald (1st point in 12 games) ended long droughts without points… Isles have scored 30 of their 58 goals in the second period, but have been outscored 21-12 in the third period. The Isles have been outscored 14-3 in the third period of the last 11 games…. The Red Wings are 6-0-7 in 1-goal games while the Isles are 5-6-3…Detroit scored 9 seconds after the Islanders did so in the first period and 33 seconds after the Isles scored in the 2nd period; the Isles have now allowed six goals this season within a minute of scoring their own goal (the Isles have scored 5 such goals, following an opponents' goal with one of their own, within one minute…Pavel Datsyuk's goals, coming in his 800th NHL game, were his first against the Isles (8th game)… Kevin Poulin's shootout win stopped a streak in which the last seven shootout wins had been by Evgeni Nabokov; Poulin is now 1-1 in NHL-shootouts...The Red Wings are winless in six games (0-1-5).
The Injury
Evgeni Nabokov suffered a groin injury on the Red Wings' first goal and was removed from the game. He will re-evaluated on Monday.

Home and Road
The Islanders are 8-10-3 overall, 5-4-3 at home and 3-6-0 on the road. They finish their homestand with a 2-1-0 record.
The Red Wings are 9-5-7 overall; they are 3-2-6 at home and 6-3-1 on the road. The Wings have now played five consecutive overtime/shootout games and lost them all – the first two were in overtime and the last three were in a shootout. They are the first team the 2003-04 Edmonton Oilers to play five consecutive overtime games.
In the Nets
Evgeni Nabokov allowed a goal on the only shot he faced before being removed for injury. It was his shortest start since January 29, 2000 (against the Islanders; allowed 2 goals in 1:57 and was pulled).
Kevin Poulin made 19 saves and improves to 3-5-0 on the season. Poulin has allowed only 13 goals (8 at even-strength) in his last six appearances (3-3-0, 2.17 goals against average, 91.9 save percentage). Poulin records his first career win in the shootout (1-1).
Jonas Gustavsson made 37 saves for the Wings and is now 3-0-1 on the season. He falls to 6-6 all-time in the shootout.
Power Plays
The Islanders were 1-6 while the Red Wings were 1-1. The Isles had only one shot on goal on their first three power plays (1 goal) but generated 15 shots on goal on their final three power plays.
The Isles are 5-2-3 when they score at least one power play goal and 3-8-0 when they do not. The Isles are 2-8-2 when they allow at least one power play goal and 6-2-1 when they do not.
Over the last 11 games, the Isles power play is 4-41 (9.8%) while the penalty kill is 14-36 (61.1%).

MacDonald is the first Islander since Tom Poti (six times in 2006-07) to play at least thirty minutes in four games in a season. It's the second time that he has done so in consecutive games.

The Isles have won their last three games in Toronto (first time since 12/11/91-2/3/93), outscoring the Leafs by a 17-9 score. The Isles have scored at least five goals in each of the three games; it's the first time they have ever scored five goals in three straight games in Toronto.
The Isles are 3-0-2 overall vs. Toronto in their last five games, holding the Leafs to 21 shots or fewer three of them. It's their first five-game point streak vs. Toronto since 2001-2003.
The Isles have not won four straight games in Toronto since winning seven straight (plus one in the playoffs) from 1978-82; they will be looking to earn a point in six straight games against the Leafs for the first time since 3/9/85-1/10/87 (6-0-0).
