It Happened at the Coliseum … on OCTOBER 8th

9 years ago tonight (2005): The Isles played their first home game in 18 months, and defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2.

Jason Blake, Miro Satan and Shawn Bates scored for the Islanders; Eric Staal scored the game’s first and last goals for the Canes.

"I think I deserve one of those," said Satan, about his first goal as an Islanders. "I had good chances (in pre-season) and I couldn't put it in so maybe this is what happens afterward."

Rick DiPietro made 42 saves for the Islanders, including 16 in the first period.

"If we could have buried a few more chances early in the game, it might have been a different story," Eric Staal said. "DiPietro came up big."

Also on this date: (2013) John Tavares scored twice as the Islanders pounded the Phoenix Coyotes 6-1 for their most one-sided Coliseum win in 32 months.

All-time, the Isles played five October 8th games at the Coliseum and finish with a 2-3-0 record on this date at 1255 Hempstead Turnpike in Uniondale.
