5 years ago tonight (2009)- Brendan Witt scored twice in the second period for his only career multi-goal game, breaking a 1-1 tie as the Islanders went over NHL-.500 for the first time in the Scott Gordon era with a 3-1 win over Edmonton. It was Witt’s first goals since scoring on January 22, 2008 against Carolina and the final two goals of his NHL career.
"I got fortunate," Witt said. "The first one kind of caught Khabibulin. I don't think he was ready. The second one, I think it went off one of their guys. You never know what happens when you throw the puck to the net."
John Tavares had the other Islander goal.
