We mentioned last night that the Isles defense tallied 3 goals in a game for the first time since February 9, 2010 when Mark Streit, Freddy Meyer and Bruno Gervais all scored vs Nashville.
The NHL noted earlier today that Calvin deHaan is the first Islanders defenseman to score shorthanded since Oct. 16, 2010 (Milan Jurcina).
Here's quite a bit more on last night's performance from the Islander defense.
Last 7 shorthanded goals by Islander defensemen: (thanks hockey-reference.com)
Calvin de Haan | 23-234 | D | 2014-12-29 | WSH
Milan Jurcina | 27-131 | D | 2010-10-16 | COL
Radek Martinek | 33-054 | D | 2009-10-24 | WSH
Chris Campoli | 24-117 | D | 2008-11-03 | CBJ
Mark Streit | 30-321 | D | 2008-10-27 | NYR
Rob Davison | 27-322 | D | 2008-03-18 | TOR
Chris Campoli | 23-173 | D | 2007-12-29 | NJD |
That makes deHaan the youngest Islander defenseman in exactly 7 years to score a SH goal; he can also now say he shares the club record for SH goals in a game by a defenseman. No Isles defender has ever scored 2 SH goals in a game.
Lubomir Visnovsky and Johnny Boychuk both scored on the power play for the Isles last night, marking the first time that the Isles' defense had scored 2 PP goals in the same game since 2-13-11 in Buffalo. Ty Wishart & Milan Jurcina had those goals -- it was the only goal Wishart ever scored in the NHL.
The last time the Isles' defense scored both on the PP and SH in the same game was on 12/29/07 vs New Jersey. Chris Campoli scored the shorty while Marc-Andre Bergeron scored on the PP.
There is only 1 other occasion in the last 27 years (prior to last night) in which the Isles defense scored 3 special teams goals.
On October 20, 2000, Roman Hamrlik scored both a PP goal and a SH goal, while Zdeno Chara added a shorty as the Isles won in Atlanta 5-3. It was their first win of the season for Coach Butch Goring.
There is no other occasion in the past 27 years in which the Isles defense combined for 2 PP goals and 1 SH goal in a single game.
