The Skinny: Isles 2, Calgary 1

"The Skinny"

By Eric Hornick
Game 63
Isles 2, Calgary 1
Jaroslav Halak set an Islander franchise record with his 33rd win of the season and narrowly missed his 5th shutout of the season as the Islanders defeated the Calgary Flames 2-1 before a sellout crowd of 16,170 at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

Cal Clutterbuck, who had a goal disallowed earlier in the third period when the officials rules that there had been incidental contact with Calgary goaltender Karri Ramo hit the empty net with 42 seconds to play to give the Isles a 2-0 lead.  That turned out to be the winning goal when Josh Jooris scored for Calgary 21 seconds later.

The Islanders regain the Metropolitan Division lead by two points over the Rangers, and extend their lead to five points over the Penguins and eight points over the Capitals.

With their 41th win of the season (and points 83 and 84), the Isles guarantee themselves their first above NHL-.500 full season since 2006-07. It's the most wins the Isles have had in a season since they won 42 games in 2001-02.

Ryan Strome had opened the scoring with his 14th goal of the season.

The Isles are 21 games over NHL .500 for the first time since the then-Stanley Cup champion Islanders finished the 1983-84 season with a 50-26-4 record.

The Skinny
The Isles are 10-6-1 since the All-Star break… The Isles have scored first in 10 of their last 12 games… Jack Capuano recorded his 159th win as Islander coach; he is 2nd in wins to Al Arbour and now has more wins that Terry Simpson (81) and Peter Laviolette (77) did as Isles coaches, combined – they are 3rd and 4th on the win list… Nikolay Kulemin has three assists in the last two games…John Tavares' assist was his 64rd point, tying Nicklas Backstrom, Jacob Voracek and the injured Patrick Kane for the NHL lead with 64 points…The Isle have now won 23 one-goal games this season, tying the franchise record…The Strome power play goal was the first allowed by the Flames since January 27th

The Penalty Shot
Calgary's Michael Ferland was awarded a penalty shot in the first period when the referees ruled he was fouled on a breakaway by Johnny Boychuk.  Halak stopped the penalty shot; it was the third that he has faced in his career (and he has stopped two of them).  It was the first penalty shot against the Isles since Evgeni Nabokov stopped Buffalo's Thomas Vanek on January 14, 2012. Islander goalies have stopped 35 of 49 opponent penalty shots all-time, including 7 straight.

Season Series Stats
The Isles win the season series 2 games to 0 (and 4 points to 0).
The Flames were the opposition for the very first regular season game in Islander history (October 7, 1972) and this was their final trip to Long Island.
The Isles are 7-3-0 in their last 10 games against the Flames and are 4-1-0 in their last five home games against Calgary.

It Happened at the Coliseum … on FEBRUARY 27th
36 years ago tonight (1979) – Clark Gillies recorded his first hat trick in over two years, and to make it more special it came against Montreal Canadien legend Ken Dryden as the Isles pounded the three-time champions 7-3.  "It was a bad defeat; a poor game for us", Dryden told Newsday's Tim Moriarty.
Mike Bossy assisted on all three Gillies goals and finished with four assists in all as he extended his point streak to 12 games.  (The 4 assists also tied the club record at the time; Bossy holds the club record with a 6 assist game in 1981.)
The game was tied 1-1 after twenty minutes but Denis Potvin scored a power play just 1:25 into the middle period to give the Isles the lead  Gillies and Bobby Nystrom sandwiched goals around a Mario Tremblay tally to give the Isles a 4-2 lead after two periods.
The Isles blew the game open in the third, on a pair of goals by Gillies and one by Billy Harris. Gillies' second goal of the period completed his hat trick with 1:19 to play.  Rejean Houle added a goal for Montreal in the final minute.
The game came one day after Al Arbour ceded control of practice to Bert Marshall.  "I don't know what he was trying to do, but I'll say one thing.  He looked pretty grumpy from where I was standing", Gillies told Newsday's Pat Calabria.  Arbour's grumpiness was due to the Isles performance the preceding night at Madison Square Garden, when they were held without a shot in a period for the first time in their history. That same game had produced a memorable injury to the Rangers' Ulf Nilsson – an injury that inspired a chant that is heard in the Garden today.
The 7 goals matches the most goals that the Islanders have ever scored against Montreal.
Also on this date: (2007) On the day the Islanders announced that they had acquired Ryan Smyth, Jason Blake scored a first period hat trick and Trent Hunter scored a pair of goals, including one in overtime, as the Isles beat Philadelphia 6-5.
All-time, the Isles have played twelve February 27th games at the Coliseum and have compiled a 6-4-2 record on this date at 1255 Hempstead Turnpike in Uniondale.
On The Farm
Bridgeport has lost seven straight games to fall to 21-26-5-1 on the season.   The Sound Tigers lost 5-3 in Springfield on Friday night and will have a rematch with the Falcons in Springfield on Saturday.
