It Happened at the Coliseum … on MARCH 16th

30 years ago tonight (1985) – John Tonelli scored two goals and Mike Bossy added a goal (his 54th) and two assists as the Isles erased a 2-1 deficit and defeated the Washington Capitals 6-4 at the Coliseum.  Kelly Hrudey made 29 saves for the win.

Ken Morrow, who scored only 17 regular season goals in his career, scored his only goal of the season to give the Isles a 4-3 lead in the second period.  After Mike Gartner tied the game, John Tonelli’s second goal of the night gave the Isles the lead for good late in the second period.

I don't have any video of this game, but I do have video of a very memorable game (at least to me) that was played one year earlier -- it's Union vs RIT in the National Semi-Finals.  At the time, it was the longest small college game ever played and one that I had the honor of broadcasting..guess who wins?

Also on this date: (1974 and 1976) – The Isles have played only two other home games on this date, and lost both by a 3-1 score.  In 1974, the Rangers handed the Isles their 9th straight loss; Bob Cook had the only Isles goal.  In 1976, the North Stars snapped the Isles’ 11-game unbeaten streak (8-0-3) with a 3-1 win; Steve Jensen and Bryan Hextall each had a goal and an assist.  Jean Potvin had the only Isles goal.

All-time, the Isles have played just three March 16th games at the Coliseum and finish with a 1-2-0 record on this date at 1255 Hempstead Turnpike in Uniondale.
