It Happened at the Coliseum … on MARCH 2nd

5 years ago tonight (2010) - In the first game following the Olympic Break, Blake Comeau recorded his first NHL hat trick as the Isles defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 5-3.

"It was a great feeling," Comeau said. "It's been a while since I've gotten a hat trick. It was a great pass by Streiter. He had the shot, but he chose to pass. I was excited, and it was good to be able to get the win with it."

The game changed in the second period as Comeau and Jon Sim scored 24 seconds apart, chasing Hawks starter Antti Niemi.

Dwayne Roloson made 41 saves for his 20th victory of the season as the Isles defeated the Blackhawks for the sixth straight time, dating back to a 3-2 loss on December 10, 2002.

Rob Schremp had two assists, giving him 17 on the season, tying John Tavares for the club rookie lead.

The Blackhawks would go on to win the Stanley Cup three months later.

Here are the highlights with Howie Rose and Billy Jaffe:

Also on this date: (2008) - It was Core of the Four weekend, but the hero was Florida’s Craig Anderson.  Anderson made 53 saves as the Florida Panthers blanked the Isles 1-0.

The Isles had a franchise-record 29 shots in the second period alone.  Anderson established an NHL record for saves in a shutout; the record was broken by Mike Smith (54) in 2012 and by Ben Scrivens (59) in 2014.  However, Anderson’s performance stood as an NHL record for a road game, until it was broken by Colorado’s Semyon Varlamov in a 2-0 win in Chicago on January 6, 2015.

Here's the complete ceremony as it aired on FSN-NY. Deb Kaufman Placey is the host and Jiggs McDonald handles the ceremony.

Here are the game highlights, from FSN- Florida.  Steve Goldstein and Islander legend Denis Potvin are on the call.

Before the current incarnation of The Skinny, there was a (much) smaller version called Stat Trick -- here's the notes from that game:

Also on this date (2000): Dave Scatchard, Mike Watt and Olli Jokinen all scored shorthanded goals, tying the franchise record but the Isles settled for a 5-5 tie with Ottawa.

All-time, the Isles have played thirteen March 2nd games at the Coliseum and finish with a 8-4-1 record on this date at 1255 Hempstead Turnpike in Uniondale.
