It Happened at the Coliseum … on MAY 6th

22 years ago tonight (1993) – The Pittsburgh Penguins got goals from three players who will eventually end up in the Hockey Hall of Fame as they grabbed a 2-1 lead in the Patrick Division Final with a 3-1 victory over the Isles.

Ron Francis and Jaromir Jagr scored first period goals for the Penguins, but Ray Ferraro got the Isles on the board with a goal at 2:18 of the second period with his 10^th goal of the playoffs (in just 9 games).

The score stayed that way until Joey Mullen hit the empty net for the final margin of victory as the two-time champion Penguins moved within two games of their 10^th straight series win. (Spoiler alert – they wouldn’t get there)

The Penguins had won 17 straight games earlier that season (breaking the Isles' record) -- but let the record show that they needed overtime for two of them. The Isles remain to this day the only team to win 15 consecutive games in regulation.

Also on this date: (1980) The Isles were ready to punch a ticket to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time in their history, but the Sabres had other ideas, rallying from a 3-1 deficit for a 7-4 win in game 4 of their Semi-Final series.  Bob Bourne and Bob Nystrom each scored twice for the Isles.  Gilbert Perreault completed his hat trick into the empty net as the Sabres stopped an 11-game playoff losing streak against the Isles.

All-time, the Isles played two playoff games on May 6th at the Coliseum; they compiled a 0-2 playoff record on this date at 1255 Hempstead Turnpike in Uniondale.
