Brock Nelson tied a career high with his 20th goal of the season as he broke a 2-2 tie late in the second period to lead the Islanders to a 5-3 victory over the Minnesota Wild before a crowd of 13,331 at Barclays Center.

Jean-Francois Berube, who had won four straight games while on a conditioning stint in Bridgeport, stopped 40 Wild shots for his 1st National Hockey League win. 
With the win, the Isles climbed within one point of the Rangers in the battle for second place in the Metropolitan Division; the Isles have two games in hand on the Rangers.

As per the Elias Sports Bureau, Berube is the 4th Islander goalie to make at least 40 saves for his first NHL win.
The others are: Tommy Salo (40 saves vs. Quebec on 4-18-95), Roberto Luongo (43 saves in Boston on 11-28-99) and Peter Mannino (40 saves in Chicago on 3-15-09).

The Schedule
The NHL announced today that the January 23rd snow-out with Philadelphia will be made up on Sunday, April 10th, which is the day after the regular season was scheduled to end… Today's game began a stretch of 35 games in 69 days to end the regular season. The Isles will play five games in the final seven days of the regular season.
Home Sweet Home
The Isles are 16-8-3 on home-ice (35 points).  In the past 28 seasons, the Isles have earned more than 35 points in the first 27 home games only twice (40 in first 27 at home last season and 37 in 27 in 2003-04).
This was the final game of a snow-adjusted nine-game stretch in which the Isles will play seven times at home.  The Isles went 5-3-1 in this stretch, and scored at least 5 goals in four of the five wins:

Jean-Francois Berube made 40 saves to record his first NHL win; he is 1-1-0 on the season. Berube is also 4-1-0 (1.25 GAA, .960 save percentage) at Bridgeport this season.
Devyn Dubnyk made 25 saves before being replaced after the Isles' 5th goal; Dubnyk falls to 18-16-5 on the season.  Darcy Kuemper made 8 saves in relief for Minnesota.

Power Plays
The Islanders were 1-1 on the power play, while Minnesota was 1-4.
The Isles are 16-3-3 when they score at least one power play goal and 10-13-3 when they do not.  The Isles are 8-7-1 when they allow at least one power play goal and 18-9-5 when they do not. 

Three is a Magic Number
The Isles are 22-2-0 when they score at least three goals (including shootout winners) and are 4-14-6 when they do not.  The Isles were 40-8-4 when they scored at least three goals (including SO winners) last season.

One Goal Games
The Isles are 10-5-6 in games decided by a single goal including 5-5-0 in regulation. They are 2-3 in games decided in overtime and are 3-3 in shootouts.  The Isles are 5-4 in games in which an empty-net goal turns a 1 goal game into a 2-goal game.

First Goal

Second to The One
Jack Capuano, the 2nd winningest coach in Islander history, is 191-164-52 behind the Islander bench; Capuano coached his 400th career game on January 7th vs. the Caps.  Among the 9 New York area teams, only the Yankees' Joe Girardi has led his team longer than Capuano.  With 191 wins, Capuano has now won as many as any Islander other than Al Arbour has coached:

Season Series Stats

On The Farm

The Isles begin a stretch of 10 road games in the next 14 as they begin a two-game road trip in Washington in a nationally-televised game.
Washington Captain Alexander Ovechkin, who was suspended from tonight's game vs. Florida after missing this weekend's all-star game, is eligible to return for Washington; Ovechkin is 27-15-42 in 38 career games against the Isles
This is the second meeting of the teams this season; Washington defeated the Isles 4-1 in Brooklyn back on January 7th.  This will also be the Isles' first visit to Verizon Center since the Capitals defeated the Isles in game 7 of the Eastern Conference Quarter-Finals last spring.
