The Skinny: Isles 4, Florida 3 (OT); Isles lead series 2-1

"The Skinny"

By Eric Hornick

Eastern Conference First Round Game 3
Isles 4, Florida 3 (OT) (Isles lead series 2-1)
The first playoff game at Barclays will be one that will be long remembered.  Thomas Hickey scored the game-winning goal 12:31 into overtime as the Isles rallied from 2-0 and 3-1 deficits to defeat the Florida Panthers 4-3 in the third game of their Eastern Conference First Round Playoff Series before a sellout crowd of 15,795 at Barclays Center.

Florida appeared to have taken a 3-0 lead just over 4 minutes into the second period but a Coach's Challenge showed that the Panthers were offside, reversing the goal.

Reilly Smith figured in the scoring on all three Panther goals; he now has eight points (4-4-8) on Florida's ten goals in the series.

Game 4 of the series is Wednesday night in Brooklyn.

The Skinny
The Isles are 14-14 all-time in game 3's played at home and 26-22 in game 3's overall…Each of the last three game 3's has been decided in overtime… The Isles held Jaromir Jagr without a point for the third straight game; Jagr has 16 assists, but no goals, in his last 33 playoff games…John Tavares had a pair of assists, giving him points in all three game of the series (2-4-6); Okposo also had a pair of assists, giving him assists in all three games (1-4-5)…The Isles lead a series 2-1 for the second straight season; they have won 7 out of 9 times that they have led a best-of-seven series 2-1…Ryan Pulock and Thomas Hickey are the first pair of Islander defensemen to score in the same playoff game since Mark Streit (2x) and Brian Strait did so on May 7 2013 vs Pittsburgh (Game 4)…The Isles scored 2 PP goals in a playoff game for 1st since 4-28-02 vs Toronto (Game 6) and scored twice in a playoff period for the first time since the 2nd period of game 3 (4-23-02) of the same series…In Stanley Cup history, the team that breaks a 1-1 tie by winning game 3 has won 2/3rds of all best-of-7 series (194 of 291)…Reilly Smith is the first Florida Panther to record eight points in a playoff year since ten Panthers did so in 1996. Smith is 4-4-8, and +7 in the series…The Isles' playoff power play was 2-34 in 2013 and 2015, but they are 3-9 this season…The Isles last erased a 2-0 deficit to win a playoff game in 2013 in Pittsburgh (Game 2); like tonight they trailed 2-0 and 3-1 but won 4-3)

Overtime is Our Time
The Isles are 31-14 all-time in overtime, including 16-7 at home.  This was the Isles' longest game since losing game 3 to Ottawa in 2003 (Todd White, 22:25).

Florida is 2-6 all-time in overtime.

Three Firsts
Ryan Pulock, Shane Prince and Thomas Hickey each recorded their first career playoff goal. Aleksander Barkov, who had 9 shots on goal, recorded his first playoff goal for Florida.

First Time in a Ridiculously Long Time
Thomas Hickey is the first Islander defenseman since Ken Morrow (4-10-1984 vs. the Rangers) to score a playoff overtime goal.

Playoff Overtime Goals by Islander Defensemen:
28-Apr-79         Vs        New York         SF        Game 2            4          3          W (Denis Potvin)
11-Apr-80         @         Los Angeles     PRE     Game 3             4          3          W (Ken Morrow)
13-May-80        @         Philadelphia      F          Game 1             4          3          W (Denis Potvin)
20-Apr-81         @         Edmonton         QF       Game 4             5          4          W (Ken Morrow)

17-Apr-16         Vs        Florida              1st       Game 3            4          3          W (Thomas Hickey)

What a Youngster
Ryan Pulock (21 years, 194 days) is the youngest Islander defenseman to score a goal since Wayne McBean (21 years, 51 days) did so against the Rangers on April 13, 1990.

A First for Howie
Howie Rose has been the TV voice of the Islanders since 1995; this was the first Islander playoff OT goal he has ever called. "Centering feed…Hickey…he scores!!!! Thomas Hickey with the winner."
(Mike Emrick called John Tavares' overtime goal vs Washington for NBC last season)

Point Per Game Man
John Tavares now has 17 points in 16 career playoff games; he is the only Islander other than Mike Bossy (1.24 points per game) to play more than one playoff game for the Isles and average over one point per game.  (Bryan Trottier had 170 points in 175 games, falling just shy of 1.00.)

With 7 goals in those 16 games, only Bossy (.66), Ray Ferraro (.64) and Steve Thomas (.45) have averaged more goals per playoff game as an Islander than Tavares (.44) [Minimum 5 goals]

Road Warriors
The Isles finished their road schedule with a record of 20-16-5. It's the 10th time in franchise history that the Isles have won 20 road games in a season.
