The news today that Griffin Reinhart had been demoted by
Edmonton to Bakersfield (AHL) was bad news for Griffin but was another sign
that a draft day deal by Garth Snow may turn out to be among the best deals in
Islander history.
When the Isles arrived in Sunrise, Florida for the 2015
Entry Draft, the Isles did not have a pick in the first two rounds, due to
their previous trade to acquire Thomas Vanek.
However, the Isles had an interest in Mathew Barzal and when Boston bypassed him with the 13th,
14th, and 15th picks, the Isles pounced. The 16th pick belonged to Edmonton and Snow dealt Reinhart to the Oilers for two picks, the 16th and 33rd overall picks.
But Snow wasn’t done; late in the first round he traded with
Tampa Bay for a first round pick for the second straight draft. He spun that 33rd pick and the 72nd
pick for the 28th pick to the Lightning and used that to select
Anthony Beauvillier. Like the previous
year’s deal that brought the Isles Josh Ho-Sang, the Isles acquired a pick from
Tampa Bay that the Lightning had gotten from the Rangers in the Marty St. Louis deal.
While Reinhart is in Bakersfield, the two under-agers are
still in Isles camp.
It’s too soon to proclaim the Reinhart deal a home run, but
the Islanders have to be thrilled as to where this deal stands today.
