"The Skinny"
By Eric Hornick
Game 46
Isles 4, Columbus 2
Nikolay Kulemin, playing on the Isles' top line due to the absence of Anders Lee, broke a 1-1 tie late in the second period and the Isles then broke the game open with two goals in the first 5:21 of the third period as they defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-2 before a crowd of 11,419 at Barclays Center. The win moves the Isles 3 games over NHL .500 for the first time this season and extends their point streak to five games (4-0-1). Josh Bailey also scored for the Isles; it was his 100th career goal.
The Isles remain unbeaten in regulation under Coach Doug Weight (3-0-1). It's the second time in club history that a coach has opened 3-0-1 or better. Peter Laviolette went 9-0-1-1 at the start of the 2001-02 season.
Thomas Greiss, who on Monday was named the NHL's second start of the week, made 21 saves to record the victory.

The Skinny:
The Isles allowed the first goal for only the 6th time in the last 27 games but rallied to win despite trailing after 20 minutes for the first time this season (1-8-2)... Columbus has outscored their opponents 51-27 in the first period this season.… The Isles are 16-0-4 when leading after two periods.… The Isles improve to three games over NHL-.500 (20-17-9) and climb within four points out of the final playoff spot. The Isles allowed only 23 shots, matching the fewest allowed in any game this season. Josh Bailey is the 29th Islander to record 100 goals…Jason Chimera has five goals in the last 7 games after scoring only five times in the first 39 games; Chimera was also involved in his first fight as an Islander; it's the first time since 2012 that he scored a goal in a game that he also had a fighting major…The Isles have scored at least four goals in five of the last seven games and in ten of the last 15 games….Columbus is 5-6-0 in 11 games since their 16-game winning streak ended…The Isles were not shorthanded for the sixth time this season…Nick Leddy extended his point streak to three games and moved into third place on the team in scoring…Anders Lee missed his first game of the season; only six Islanders have played in every game…John Tavares had two assists, giving him 11 points (8-3-11) in the last 7 games; it was the first time Tavares had two assists in a game this season.
The 49ers
With their win the Isles moved into 11th place in the East; later wins by Buffalo and Tampa Bay, coupled with an overtime loss by Detroit and a regulation loss by New Jersey have produced a 6-way tie at 49 points (Carolina was idle). However, the Isles have played fewer games than any of the other five teams.
Good Start for Coach Weight Continues
The Isles are 3-0-1 under Coach Weight; it is their best start EVER following a mid-season coaching change:
The only other Islander coaches to have earned points in their first four games as head coach is Peter Laviolette (who won his first four and went 9-0-1-1 in his first 11 games in 2001).
Countdown to 1,000
Jason Chimera played in his 997th NHL game. 306 skaters and two goalies have played 1000 NHL games; Chimera could reach that mark on February 3rd in Detroit.
