The Skinny: Carolina 8, Isles 4

"The Skinny"

By Eric Hornick

Game 68
Carolina 8, Isles 4
Jaccob Slavin scored times to become the first Hurricane defenseman with a Hat Trick since 2008 and Jeff Skinner scored twice, including once on a penalty shot as the Carolina Hurricanes set a Barclays Center record by becoming the first opponent to score eight times in a game, defeating the Isles 8-4 before a crowd of 12,785.

Joshua Ho-Sang had a goal and an assist in his Barclays debut for his first multi-point game but the Isles suffered their second consecutive loss in regulation time for the first time since mid-December and saw their longest home point streak of the post-Cup era end at 11 games (9-0-2).

With the loss, the Isles remain one point behind Toronto for the 2nd Wild Card and are now tied with Tampa Bay.

The Skinny:
The Isles are 15-8-3 (.635) under Interim Coach Doug Weight …Since opening the season 6-10-4, Isles are 26-15-7 in their last 48 games…The Isles are 6-4-1 in the last 11 games…... The Isles' top line has 25 goals (and 41 assists) in 26 games under Weight… Joshua Ho-Sang has three points in the last two games (1-2-3) …Anthony Beauvillier assisted on Ho-Sang's goal, extending his point streak to three games… John Tavares' point streak ended at four games…Four of Jaccob Slavin's five goals this season have been scored at Barclays Center…Stephen Gionta is the 361st player to score a goal for the Isles.

First Times, Long Times
·        Jaccob Slavin's hat trick was the first for a Carolina defenseman since Joe Corso on March 16, 2008 vs Ottawa and was the first on the road for the Carolina defense since Sandis Ozolinsh in 2001.
·        The Isles allowed eight goals for the first time since being blanked 9-0, also by Carolina, on April 7, 2009.
·        Carolina got multiple goal games from two defensemen for the first time in franchise history; it's the first time two NHL defensemen had multiple goals for the same team since score 2+ goals each in a game since Shea Weber & Ryan Suter did so for Nashville (Nov. 22, 2009 @ Ottawa).
·        Carolina had three players with multiple goal games for the first time since April 6, 2010 in Tampa Bay.

The Penalty Shot
Jeff Skinner scored on a third period penalty shot; his 2nd goal on five career penalty shots.  It was the third penalty shot Thomas Greiss has faced this season; he stopped San Jose's Joe Thornton in November and Colorado's Matt Nieto in January. It was the 37th penalty shot in the NHL this season; 12 of the 37 have been successful.

All-time Islander goalies have stopped 38 of 53 opponent penalty shots.  Skinner's goal ended a streak in which Islander goalies had stopped 10 straight penalty shots. The last opponent to score vs. the Islanders was Los Angeles' Dustin Brown, who scored against Dwayne Roloson on November 13, 2010 -- the final game Scott Gordon served as head coach.
It was the 4th time the Isles had faced a penalty shot from the Hurricane franchise but the first time ever in an Islander home game. Ron Hextall allowed a goal to Andrew Cassels in Hartford in 1994; Rick DiPietro twice stopped Eric Cole in Raleigh

The 300 Club
Josh Bailey remains one point shy of becoming the 6th player from his draft class to reach 300 points:
(Stamkos, Karlsson, Eberle, Doughty, and Stepan have already done so.)  His next point will also be his 50th point of the season.
