"The Skinny"
By Eric Hornick
Game 82
Isles 3, Washington 0
Valtteri Filppula scored twice and Robin Lehner made 29 saves for his 6th shutout of the season as the Islanders concluded the regular season with a 3-0 shutout of the Stanley Cup Champion Washington Capitals before a sellout crowd of 18,506 at Capital One Arena.
The win clinches 2nd place in the Metro Division; the Isles will play game 1 of a playoff series at home for the first time since 1988 when they entertain the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The win gives the Isles 103 points overall and 51 on the road; both totals are the most in the Post-Cup era. The franchise-record 11th shutout of the season also clinched the Jennings Trophy for the Isles, who allowed the most goals in the NHL last season and the fewest in the NHL this season.

The Skinny
The Isles went 34-15-3 in their final 52 games… The Isles finished with 13 more wins and 23 more points than last season. Including shootout winners, they scored 36 fewer goals and allowed 101 fewer goals … The Isles have 52 points at home and 51 points on the road; it is their first 50-50 (points at home and on the road) season since 1980-81 … The Isles won 24 games at home and 24 games on the road; it's the first time that the Isles have ever won 24 games both at home and on the road in the same season.…The Isles finished +20 or higher; that hasn't happened since 1985-86 when six players did so...Valtteri Filppula, who missed eight games, recorded his 16th two-goal game….Matt Martin's empty-netter was his first goal in 35 games. Fittingly, both Casey Cizikas and Cal Clutterbuck were credited with assists on the final goal of the regular season…The Isles had a winning record in all seven months of the season (October- April) and also earned at least one shutout in every month… Martin finished with 275 hits on the season; he has had six of the 10 Isles seasons with at least 275 hits (Clutterbuck-2, Chara-2)…The Isles shutout the Caps in both games in DC this season, and in eight of the last nine periods the teams played this season…Robin Lehner raised his save percentage to .930, which breaks the franchise record previously held by Chico Resch (.928 in 1975-76). He is only the 3rd goalie in Isles history with at least six shutouts in a season (Resch -7 in 1975-76, Halak -6 in 2014-15).
