"The Skinny"
By Eric Hornick
Game 3
Edmonton 5, Isles 2
It was a night to remember for Noah Dobson as he recorded an assist in his NHL debut but Edmonton's James Neal stole the show with his first career 4-goal game, including a natural hat trick, as the Oilers defeat Isles 5-2 on Coliseum ice before a crowd of 10,985.
Josh Bailey became the first non-dynasty Islander to appear in 800 games, but the Isles suffered a regulation home loss to Edmonton for the first time since 1999 (10-0-2 overall, and 8-0-0 at the Coliseum).
The Scoring:
1st Period
Anthony Beauvillier (2) Leo Komarov 14:14 EDM 0,NYI 1 SHG
James Neal (3) 17:53 EDM 1,NYI 1
James Neal (4) Connor McDavid, Darnell Nurse 19:29 EDM 2,NYI 1 PPG
2nd Period
James Neal (5) Leon Draisaitl, Connor McDavid 06:31 EDM 3,NYI 1 PPG
Zack Kassian (3) Leon Draisaitl, Connor McDavid 08:46 EDM 4,NYI 1
3rd Period
James Neal (6) Tomas Jurco, Oscar Klefbom 06:51 EDM 5,NYI 1
Matt Martin (1) Noah Dobson, Casey Cizikas 13:32 EDM 5,NYI 2
The Skinny
Anthony Beauvillier got the Islanders started with his first career shorthanded goal; it was his 50th career goal. Beauvillier is the youngest Islander since Ryan Strome (12-2-14 vs. Ottawa) to score a shorthanded goal… Leo Komarov assisted on the tally as both players extended their season-opening point streak to three games.…Connor McDavid had three assists…Brock Nelson set a career high with six penalty minutes and leads the team with 10 PIM this season; he had only 28 all last season.
Big Game James Neal
Neal now has seven career hat tricks, and his league-leading six goals this season are one shy of last season's total. Neal has now recorded a hat trick for four different teams (DAL-PIT-NSH-EDM). He has 16 of his 276 career goals against the Isles; only Winnipeg had allowed more Neal goals (19).
Neal is the first opponent to have a natural hat trick against the Isles since Evgeni Malkin (11/26/2008) and the first opponent to score four goals against the Isles since Patrick Elias did so for New Jersey (3/30/2001). Neal is also the first opponent to score four goals in an Islander home game since Radek Dvorak did so for the Rangers (3/29/2001).
Dobson's debut
Noah Dobson had an assist, went +1, had three shots on goal and eight attempts in his NHL debut. He is the first Islander defenseman since Mark Katic (2/24/2011 vs. Philadelphia) to record an assist in his first game; it was Katic's only NHL point. Dobson is also the first teenage Islander defenseman to record an assist since Mathieu Biron recorded his final point as a teenager on 2/28/2000.
Brock-tober
Brock Nelson has been a fast starter during his NHL career. He is 24-21-45 in 63 career October games, tallying more goals and more points than in any other month. Nelson came close to figuring in the scoring tonight, but his apparent third period goal was reversed after video review determined that he directed the puck using a direct kicking motion.
It's Good to be Home
The Isles are 1-2-0 on Coliseum ice (1 sellout). The Isles will play 28 of their 41 home games this season at the Coliseum.
