Semyon Varlamov made 35 saves and the Panthers couldn't beat him in the shootout either, as the Isles ended a two-game losing streak with a 3-2 shootout win before an Alumni Weekend crowd of 11,421 at Nassau Coliseum.
Brock Nelson converted the only goal of the shootout to give the Isles the victory as they picked up where they left off last season on the back end of back-to-backs; the Isles are now 12-1-1 on the back end under Barry Trotz.

Brock Nelson's goal was his 4th career shootout-deciding goal. Nelson's last two goals also were deciding goal (1/7/2018 vs. New Jersey and 4/4/2019 @ Florida)…The Isles improve to 80-64 all-time in shootouts as they extend their NHL record for shootout win (Pittsburgh and the Rangers have 77).
Semyon Varlamov stopped all three shots he faced to improve to 31-15 all-time in shootouts; his save percentage in shootouts improves to .755 (best in NHL history among goalies who have faced at least 100 shots). That .755 save percentage matches Thomas Greiss' percentage as an Islander!
The Skinny Denis Malgin opened the scoring; he has tallied four times in seven games against the Isles…Adam Pelech played 25:36 (his most under Trotz and second-highest of career); four different Isles have led the team in ice-time over the first five games… Nick Leddy returned after missing one game with an injury; Ross Johnston made his season debut and got involved in the Isles' first fight of the year…Semyon Varlamov is the 52nd goalie in Isles history and the 49th to record at least one win…He is the first Islander since Anders Nilsson (1-20-2014 vs. Philadelphia) to record his first win in a shootout; the other Isles goalies to do so are Mike Dunham, Dwayne Roloson, Nathan Lawson, and Mikko Koskinen…The Isles stopped Mike Hoffman's four-game point streak (5-2-7)...Evgenii Dadonov has six goals (6-3-9) in seven games against the Isles.

Charlotte defeated the Sound Tigers 4-1 on Saturday to earn a split of the weekend series. Simon Holmstrom, the Isles' first pick in this year's draft, earned his first professional point, assisting on the only Bridgeport goal (by Arnaud Durandeau).
Bridgeport is now off until next Saturday, when they begin a three-game homestand by hosting Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in the Sound Tiger's home opener.

The homestand concludes as the Isles welcome the Stanley Cup Champion St. Louis Blues to the Coliseum.
The Isles swept the Blues last season, winning both games just as the Blues were getting things together last January.
Overall the Isles are 6-1-1 in the last eight games against the Blues; this will be the Blues' first visit to Long Island since December 6, 2014 when St. Louis rallied from 3-0 down for a 6-4 win. Marty Brodeur earned the win in relief of Jake Allen; it was the 689th win of his career (and his first of three wins for St. Louis).
