TJ Oshie's second period power play goal broke a 1-1 tie and Ilya Samsonov made 25 saves to win his NHL debut as the Washington Capitals spoiled the Isles' season opener with a 2-1 win on Coliseum ice before a sellout crowd of 13,917.
Devon Toews was credited with the only Islander goal when his shot deflected in off three different Capitals.
Semyon Varlamov made 26 saves but takes the loss in his Islander debut.

The Isles will look for their first victory of the season as the homestand continues with a visit from the Winnipeg Jets.
The teams last met on March 29th in Winnipeg as the Isles rallied late in the third period for a 5-4 win as Casey Cizikas scored the tying goal (18:14) and Jordan Eberle scored the winner (18:47).
