"Mr. Game 7" did it in Round 8. Justin Williams, playing his first game of the season, scored the deciding goal of the shootout as the Carolina Hurricanes defeat the Islanders 2-1 before a sellout crowd of 18,680 at PNC Arena.
The Isles are 3-5-2 in January (1-4-1 vs Division foes) with one game to play; this will be the Isles' first losing month under Barry Trotz.

The Isles went 0-3 on the power play, but did score right after the 2nd power play; the Isles have had at least three power plays in three consecutive games for only the 2nd time all season (6 games in November) …Barry Trotz remains just one win behind Peter Laviolette for 4th place on the all-time team list… Anders Lee's goal was his 167th, leaving him one behind Ziggy Palffy for 13th place; it was his 286th point, tying Ed Westfall for 24th…Lee finished with eight shots on goal (one shy of his career high)…Johnny Boychuk celebrated his 36th birthday: Dennis Seidenberg was the last Islander defenseman to appear in a game after his 36th birthday. (28 games in 2017-18). Boychuk is the first Islander to appear in a game on his 36th (or later) birthday since Marty Reasoner played on his 36th in 2013…Nick Leddy appeared in his 700th NHL game (442 with the Isles).
The Illness
Josh Bailey left the game after the first period (ill) and did not return.
The Injury
Matt Martin was hit with a deflected puck during warm-ups and left warm-ups early. He did return after the national anthem and played the whole game.
It's Good to be Home(s)
The Isles are 11-7-1 on Coliseum ice, but only 2-5-1 in their last 8 games in Uniondale. The Isles will play 28 of their 41 home games this season at the Coliseum. The Isles will complete the unofficial first half of the season as they battle the Rangers at the Garden. It will be the third meeting in nine days between the teams with the Rangers earning a 6-2 win at the Garden and a last-minute 3-2 win at the Coliseum.
While the Isles are 8-3-0 in their last 11 trips to the Garden, the Rangers have won the last three meetings (one in each building) dating back to last January. Chris Kreider's winning goal at 19:35 of the third period was the latest for the Rangers against the Isles since 1991.
