Game 68
Vancouver 5, Isles 4 (SO)
Brock Nelson's second goal of the game forced overtime, but JT Miller scored the only goal of the shootout as the Vancouver Canucks defeated the Islanders 5-4 before a sellout crowd of 18,871 at Rogers Arena.

The game was within one goal throughout; Andrew Ladd's first goal since October 30, 2018 gave the Isles their only lead but the Isles would rally three other times to get even.

The loss earned the Isles their second point in two games but extended the winless streak to seven games (0-3-4).  It's the first time since February/March 2018 (8 games) that the Isles have gone at least five games without a win.

It's the Isles' 80th point, which leaves them one point behind both Carolina and Columbus for one of the two wild card spots.  Carolina and the Isles each have 14 games to play while Columbus has 12.

Game 67
Carolina 3, Isles 2 (OT)
Vincent Trocheck scored a 4-on-3 overtime goal to give the Carolina Hurricanes a 3-2 victory over the Islanders before a sellout crowd of 13,917 at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

Ryan Pulock and Josh Bailey scored the Islander goals; it's the third straight game that Pulock has scored a goal.

The loss earned the Isles their first point in four games but extended the Isles winless streak to six games (0-3-3).  It's the first time since February/March 2018 (8 games) that the Isles have gone at least five games without a win.

The Isles moved back into the 1st wild card with 79 points (tied with Columbus, but in one fewer game), pending the outcome of the Blue Jackets' game in Edmonton on Saturday night.

The Skinny: Ottawa 4, Isles 3

"The Skinny"

By Eric Hornick

Game 66
Ottawa 4, Isles 3
Mikkel Boedker's shorthanded goal, the third allowed by the Isles in two games, tied the game at the exact midpoint and the Ottawa Senators then got goals from Anthony Duclair and Brady Tkachuk enroute to a 4-3 win over the Islanders before a crowd of 13,445 at Canadian Tire Centre.

Ryan Pulock scored with 2:00 to play on a 6-on-5 to cut the lead to 4-3 but the Isles could not even the score.

The loss extended the Isles winless streak to five games (0-2-3); the last three losses have all come in regulation.  It's the first time since February/March 2018 (8 games) that the Isles have gone at least five games without a point.

The Isles remain in the 2nd wild card with 78 points (one behind Columbus, but in two fewer games).

The Skinny
The Isles are 6-8-3 since the All-Star Break; they have scored 35 goals in the nine games that they earned points but only eight goals in their eight regulation losses…Anders Lee's 1st period goal was his 50th career power play (tied Pierre Turgeon for 9th in club history) but only his second this season (12/9/19 in Tampa)…Lee has scored at least 20 goals five times in his career, including the last four seasons; Lee also has nine goals in 20 career games vs Ottawa …Mathew Barzal played at least 20 minutes for the 31st  time this season (and 60th time in his career); he has played at least 20 minutes in 12 straight games…J-G Pageau was honored with a scoreboard video in the first period but did not record a point…Mathew Barzal reached the 40- assist mark for the third straight season; he is only the second Islander in the 2000's with three consecutive 40-assist seasons (Josh Bailey); Barzal recorded his 15th career 3-point game (3rd this season)…The Isles had gone 6-0-1 in the previous seven games that they scored the first goal…Mathew Barzal was the Isles' best in the circle for the second straight game (8 of 10 in game, 14 of 18 in last two games)…Barzal now has 59 points; with his next point he will become the 2nd-youngest Islander to have three seasons with 60+ points, joining Bryan Trottier…Ottawa improves to 17-2-1 when leading after two periods…Mikkel Boedker's shorty was the Sens' 15th, which leads the NHL.  The Sens have scored at least 15 SH goals five times in the last fifteen seasons; the rest of the NHL has done so only ten times in that span.

First Times in a Long Time
The Isles' late goal makes this the first time under Barry Trotz that they lost a ROAD game in regulation when scoring 3+ goals; they were perfect this season (14-0-0) and 34-0-1 in that situation under Trotz.  Their last road loss when scoring 3+ was in New Jersey on March 31, 2018.

The Isles have allowed three shorthanded goals in the last two games after allowing only two in the season's first 64 games.  It's the first time that they have allowed shorties in consecutive games since November 29-30, 2013 and the first time that they have allowed three SHGs in a two-game period since April 17-18, 2006.

Last Season vs. This Season
The Isles are 35-23-8 thru 66 games this season; they were 38-21-7 thru 66 games last season.  Their 78 points in 65 games is the 4th-highest in the Post-Cup era (87 points in 2014-15, 83 points last season and 82 points in 2015-16).

It's Good to be Home(s)
The Isles are playing 28 of their 41 home games this season at the Coliseum.  The Isles are 13-8-2 on Coliseum ice where they have sold out six straight games (and ten games this season).  The Isles are 7-1-3 at Barclays Center this season and 12-1-3 in their last 16 regular season home games); the remaining Brooklyn games are on March 17th vs. Calgary, and March 22nd vs. Carolina.

Governor Cuomo announced before the February 29th game that all home playoff games this season and all home regular season and playoff games next season will be played at the Coliseum.

On the Road
The Isles are 15-14-3 on the road this season but are only 3-8-2 in the last 13 games.

Lots of Home Cooking
The Isles are in a stretch in which they play six of eight games at home.  The Isles are 2-3-2 in this stretch.

2/25 Vs Rangers (L 3-4 OT)

2/29 Vs Bruins (L 0-4)
3/3 Vs Canadiens (L 2-6)

[MSG+ (pre-game at 12:30), 88.7 WRHU-FM, WRCN 103.9FM, ESPN-1050]
The Isles return to the Coliseum for a single, yet very important, game as they welcome the Hurricanes.

Carolina, who swept the Isles in last year's second round, are 2-0 against the Isles this season, winning 5-2 in the game that preceded the Isles' 17-game point streak  and 2-1 in an 8-round shootout just before the All-Star Break.

This is the final game before the Isles head out on a four-game road trip to Western Canada … and Pittsburgh.  It is also the last Coliseum game until March 26th by which time the Isles will have played their final game ever at Barclays Center.

The Skinny: Montreal 6, Isles 2

"The Skinny"

By Eric Hornick

Game 65
Montreal 6, Isles 2
Brendan Gallagher scored a goal and added an assist to spur a three goals in 5:13 outburst in the first period and the Montreal Canadiens defeated the Isles 6-2 before a crowd of 12,788 at Barclays Center.

The loss extended the Isles winless streak to four games (0-2-2); it's the first Isles loss in regulation time on Barclays Center ice since January 12, 2019 (12-0-3) and their first in eleven games this season.

With the loss, the Isles drop four points behind the third place Penguins and remain five points behind second place Philadelphia. The Isles remain in the top wild card with 78 points (same as Columbus, but in two fewer games). Only nine points separate 2nd place and 7th place in the Metro.

The Skinny
The Isles are 6-7-3 since the All-Star Break; they have scored 35 goals in the nine games that they earned points but only five goals in their seven regulation losses….Brock Nelson's third period goal ended an Isles scoreless streak at 154:03; after taking a 2-0 lead in St. Louis on Thursday, the Isles allowed 11 consecutive goals for the first time since 2011 before scoring twice in the third period. …Mathew Barzal played at least 20 minutes for the 30th time this season (and 59th time in his career); he has played at least 20 minutes in 11 straight games…The Isles allowed two shorthanded goals for the first time since October 24, 2017 in Minnesota; they had allowed only two SHG's this season entering the game…It's the first time since April 9, 2016 (OTT vs BOS) that an NHL team scored two shorthanded goals but did not have a power play…Charles Hudon scored for the first time in the NHL since November 2018…Nelson, who earned points on both Islander goals is now one point shy of his career high and tied his career high in assists (both from last year)…J-G Pageau finished -5; he is the first Islander to do so since Brendan Witt did so in an overtime loss to Washington on December 16, 2008… New dad Anders Lee had a goal disallowed in the opening seconds of the third period when it was ruled that he kicked the puck in….The Canadiens have outscored their opponents 69-53 in the first period; Thomas Greiss has allowed 30 goals in the first period and only 40 goals in the rest of the game.

The Injuries
Tomas Tatar left the game in the first period and did not return.  Johnny Boychuk suffered an upper body injury on an errant skate blade in the third period and did not return.

On the Road
The Isles are 15-13-3 on the road this season but are only 3-7-2 in the last 12 games.
