Nick Leddy played his 48th playoff game as an Islander without being penalized, extending his own club record…Victor Hedman is the first defenseman since Brian Leetch (1994) to score at least nine playoff goals; it was the first Tampa goal in 74:58…Nikita Kucherov assisted on the Hedman goal, giving him 10 points in the series (2-8-10)…Tampa had lost five straight games when a win would have put them in the Stanley Cup Final….For the second straight game, 17  of the 18 skaters had a hit in this game…Noah Dobson replaced Adam Pelech in the lineup and played 12:55 in his playoff debut; he is the first 20-year-old to appear in a playoff game for the Isles since Darius Kasparaitis and Steve Junker did so in 1993...The Isles dressed seven defenseman for the second straight game; prior to Game 5 the Isles had not dressed seven d-men in a playoff game since April 14, 1987 …Devon Toews' goal  was the 11th by an Islander defenseman – most since the D scored 17 in 1983….… Matt Martin had two hits; he leads the playoffs with 103 hits (10 more than Ryan Reaves and 13 more than Jamie Oleksiak).  Martin is the 9th NHLer to record 100 hits in a post-season…Cal Clutterbuck had 12 hits, giving him 22 in the last 2 days.  Clutterbuck tied Martin and Gabriel Landeskog (COL) for the most hits in a game in this year's post-season…The Isles killed 14 of 15 over the final five games, including an Andy Green double-minor that included the first 3:37 of overtime…Devon Toews scored the only Islander goal in a 2-1 loss that opened the regular season on October 4th; 349 days later Devon Toews scored the only Islander goal in a 2-1 loss…Mathew Barzal's assist gave him 24 points in 30 career playoff games.  Denis Potvin (33) and Mike Bossy (30) and the only Isles with more points through 30 career playoff games…Semyon Varlamov set a career playoff high with 46 saves; it is the most saves by an Islander goalie facing elimination since Kelly Hrudey stopped 73 in the Easter Epic.  The Isles were outshot 48-27; it is the first time since Game 7 vs. Pittsburgh in 1993 that the Isles have been outshot by at least 21 shots.

What a Series
The Lightning advanced to the Final despite leading for only 8.8 seconds in Games 2, 3, 5 and 6 combined.  The Isles scored first in games 2-6; it's the first time since 1982 that they have scored first in five straight playoff  games.

School is Out
The Isles fall to 28-22 all-time when facing elimination, including 2-1 this year (wins in Game 7 vs. Philadelphia and Game 5 vs. Tampa Bay)

Sudden Death
This was the 4th time that the Isles were eliminated on an overtime goal.  Lanny Mc Donald (Toronto-1978), Martin St. Louis (Tampa Bay -2004) and Brooks Orpik (Pittsburgh-2013) scored the other season-ending goals.

A Special Summer
The Isles won 13 games this summer. It is their most wins in a single post-season other than the four teams that won the Stanley Cup:

1983 -15
2020 -13
1984 -12

The Isles established a club record by playing in their 22nd playoff game in 2020:

NHL DRAFT  October 6-7
The Isles do not currently have a pick in the first two rounds (both traded to Ottawa for JG Pageau). The Isles own their own picks in Rounds 3- 7.

And Finally…
68 regular season and 22 playoff games makes 90 games in 11 months and 13 days. With everything that went on, one thing was consistent. All 90 games were followed by The Skinny, making yet another perfect season, at least in attendance.  The Skinny streak is 682 consecutive games (including playoffs).  I hope to extend the streak sometime soon.

The Skinny
Jordan Eberle recorded his first career overtime goal and second career overtime point; he assisted on Mathew Barzal's winner vs. Washington last month…It is the first overtime point for Anders Lee…. Nick Leddy played his 47th playoff game as an Islander without being penalized, extending his own club record…Victor Hedman is the first defenseman since Brian Leetch (1994) to score at least eight playoff goals…The Isles held Nikita Kucherov pointless, ending his four game point streak (2-7-9)…Tampa Bay had won six straight games when leading a series 3-1 before tonight's loss, however Tampa has now lost five straight games when a win would have put them in the Stanley Cup Final….35 of the 36 skaters had a hit in this game…Johnny Boychuk returned to the Isles' lineup for the first time since August 1st….The Isles dressed seven defenseman for the first time since October 25th in Ottawa; it is the first time since April 14, 1987 that the Isles have dressed 7 d-men in a playoff game.  That was game 5 of a series with Washington that the Isles trailed 3-1 and would eventually win in seven games…Ryan Pulock's goal was the 10th by an Islander defenseman – most since the D scored 17 in 1983…The Isles dressed two defensemen 36 or older in a playoff game for the first time since May 11, 2013 vs. Pittsburgh (Radek Martinek and Lubomir Visnovsky)…The Isles will carry a shutout streak of 68:30 into Game 6...The Isles have been outscored 8-3 by Tampa Bay in the third period; the Isles still lead the NHL with 25 third period goals. … Matt Martin had five hits; he leads the playoffs with 101 hits (8 more than Ryan Reaves and 11 more than Jamie Oleksiak).  Martin is the 9th NHLer to record 100 hits in a post-season…Cal Clutterbuck had ten hits, becoming the fourth different Islander to do so in this year's post-season…Ryan Pulock's goal was his first in 19 games; his other goal tied game 2 vs. Florida and then was followed by the winning goal off the stick of (you guessed it) Jordan Eberle....The Isles now lead the NHL with 896 hits, just ahead of Dallas (879)…The Isles finished with 75 hits (most of any team this post-season) and the teams combined for 145 (also the most)…The Isles finished with 24 shots (second-fewest among multiple overtime winning teams; Colorado had 21 in a 2-OT win in 2004)…This is the first time in three post-season meetings with Tampa Bay that the Isles have forced a game 6…The Isles have killed 9 of 10 over the last four games, including an Anthony Beauvillier double-minor that included the first 2:37 of overtime.

Marathon Men
This was the fifth-longest game in Islander history:
04/18/87  @ Pat LaFontaine W Wsh 68:47
04/22/16  @ Alan Quine W Fla 36:00
09/03/20  Vs Ivan Provorov L Phl 35:03 (Toronto)
04/20/93  @ Brian Mullen W Wsh 34:50
09/15/20  @ Jordan Eberle W TB 32:30 (Edmonton)
Two of the five longest games in Islander history have been played this month…The Isles have won five of the six longest games that they have played; they have won every previous series that included an overtime game lasting over 30 minutes….Tampa Bay had won seven straight overtime games, including five this season, to surpass the Isles as the most successful overtime team in NHL history; Eberle's goal ended a 176:10 shutout streak…The Isles are 8-4 all-time in multiple overtime games while Tampa Bay is 5-3.

Alberta Staving Time
The Isles improve to 28-21 all-time when facing elimination, including 2-0 this year (Game 7 vs. Philadelphia and Game 5 vs. Philadelphia.

Twice before the Isles have rallied from 3-1 down to win a series (1975 vs. Pittsburgh and 1987 vs. Washington).

Super Staver
Eberle is the 8th Islander to score in overtime with the team facing elimination but is only the third to do so in a game that extended a series (Jude Drouin in 1975 vs. Philadelphia, Billy Harris in 1977 vs. Montreal). The others were all in decisive games (JP Parise in 1975 vs. NY Rangers, John Tonelli in 1982 vs. Pittsburgh, Ken Morrow in 1984 vs. NY Rangers, Pat LaFontaine in 1987 vs. Washington and David Volek in 1993 vs. Pittsburgh).

A Special Summer
The Isles have won 13 games this summer. It is their most wins in a single post-season other than the four teams that won the Stanley Cup:
1980 -15
1981 -15
1982 -15
1983 -15
2020 -13
1984 -12

This was the 21st game the Isles have played this summer; that ties the club record:
2020 – 21
1980 – 21
1984 – 21
1983 – 20
1982 – 19
1981 – 19

Mayfield is one of only six players in NHL +13 or better (Victor Hedman +17, Nikita Kucherov +14, Nathan McKinnon +13, Ondrej Palat +13, Brayden Point +13)

[NBCSN, 88.7 WRHU-FM, WRCN 103.9FM, ESPN-Radio; 30-minute pre-game and expanded post-game on MSG+]

The Islanders will look to even the series as they play game 6 in Edmonton.

The Skinny on: Time to Stave

According to Webster, "stave off" has been around for nearly four centuries. Funny, I didn't realize that there were playoffs then.

It seems like the only time I ever hear the word "stave" is when a sports team is one game away from elimination - the situation the Isles will find themselves tonight in Edmonton against Tampa Bay.

The Islanders have successfully staved off elimination 27 times in 48 tries. Of course the other 21 times they've ended up on the wrong side of a handshake.

Four times in their history, the "Never-Say-Dielanders" have managed to stave off elimination at least three times in a single playoff year.

In 1975, the Isles beat the Rangers in the decisive Game 3, and then found themselves down 3-0 to both Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. The Isles won eight of the nine elimination games they played, setting an NHL-record for avoiding elimination.

In 1985, their first playoff after losing the Cup, the Isles lost first two playoff games, and looked like they were headed to an early spring, before rallying to beat the Caps three times, to stave off elimination each time. The Isles trailed the Flyers 3-0 in the second round and won game four before losing the series in five. Four successful staves.

Two years later the Caps and Flyers again became Islander victims. The Isles trailed both series 3-1; yet beat the Capitals on Easter morning, before losing to Philadelphia in seven. Five more successful staves.

Finally in 1993, the Isles trailed Pittsburgh 3-2 before winning in 7 on David Volek's overtime goal. After Montreal used eight guys on the ice to score in OT in Game 3 of the Conference Finals to grab a 3-0 lead in the series, the Isles staved off elimination with a home-ice win in game four, only to fall to the eventual champs in Game five. Three more staves.

Six other seasons featured one successful stave. In 1976 and 1977, the Isles forced the eventual champion Canadiens an extra game each year with their backs against the wall. In 1982 and 1984, with their dynasty on the line, the Isles used overtime goals to beat Pittsburgh and the Rangers to stave off elimination and increase the legacy that guides this franchise today. In 2002, the Isles overcame the loss of Michael Peca and Kenny Jonsson in game 5 in Toronto to win an emotional game six at home.  And of course, in 2015, the Isles won the final game in the first era of the Coliseum over Washington, only to drop game 7 in DC,

The most recent successful stave occurred just 10 days ago, as the Isles beat Philadelphia in Game 7.  A win tonight would give the Islanders multiple staves in the same season for the first time since (there's that year again) 1993.

In games facing potential elimination, the Isles are 16-5 at home and 11-16 on the road (including 1-0 this year in Toronto against Philadelphia).

The Isles were eliminated at home in 1977 by Montreal, in 1978 by Toronto, in 1986 by Washington, in 1994 by the Rangers and in 2013 by Pittsburgh.

The Isles have been eliminated in the playoffs only 21 times. In seven of those seasons, the team that beat the Isles won the Stanley Cup [75-76-77-84-93-94-04] and in three other years, the team that beat the Isles lost in the Finals [79-85-87].

"The Skinny"

By Eric Hornick

Eastern Conference Final Game 4

Tampa Bay leads best-of-7 series, 3-1

Josh Bailey earned an assist on Nelson's goal to temporarily give him the NHL lead with 18 assists; however, Nikita Kucherov earned assists on goals from Palat and from Brayden Point to pass Bailey.

The Skinny
The Isles have been outscored 8-3 by Tampa Bay in the third period; the Isles still lead the NHL with 25 third period goals. …Nick Leddy played his 46th playoff game as an Islander without being penalized, extending his own club record … Matt Martin had six hits; he leads the playoffs with 96 hits (9 more than Ryan Reaves and 10 more than Jamie Oleksiak).  Only eight NHLers have recorded 100 hits in a post-season…Nikita Kucherov recorded his 25th multi-point game, breaking Martin St. Louis' club record; Kucherov and Brayden Point are now tied for the scoring lead in this year's playoffs (25) with Nathan McKinnon... Nine of Kucherov's points (2-7-9) have come in this series…Josh Bailey joined Ray Ferraro as the only Islanders outside of the Dynasty era to record 20 points in a playoff year.. Pat Maroon's empty-net goal was the first against the Isles this summer; the Isles have scored an NHL-leading seven empty-net goals.

The Injury
Brayden Point did not play in the final 9 minutes after a collision with Adam Pelech. Point also left game 2 and  missed game 3 with an injury

That Was Fast
Brock Nelson had the game's first goal, but the Isles' lead lasted only 15 seconds.  Twelve seconds later the Isles were behind.
The three goals by both team in 27 seconds tied the 3rd-fastest three goals in Stanley Cup history:
o 21 seconds- Chicago vs. Edmonton in 1985
o 23 seconds – Toronto vs. Atlanta in 1978
o 27 seconds – Phoenix vs. Detroit in 1998
o 27 seconds -  Isles vs Tampa Bay in 2020.
Tampa's two in 12 seconds are the fastest two for the Lightning in a playoff game, breaking a record of fifteen seconds that was sent 18 days ago vs. Boston.
They were the 2nd-fastest two goals allowed by the Isles; Montreal scored two in nine seconds on 5/24/1993.

A Special Summer
The Isles have won 12 games this summer. It is their most wins in a single post-season since the Dynasty Era:
1980 -15
1981 -15
1982 -15
1983 -15
1984 -12
2020 -12

This was the 20th game the Isles have played this summer; they will tie the club record of 21 with game 5 on Tuesday:
1980 – 21
1984 – 21
2020 – 20
1983 – 20
1982 – 19
1981 – 19
1993 - 18
1975 – 17

Matt Joins the Club
Matt Martin is only the 7th Islander in the last 27 years to score 5 goals in a playoff year.
Anthony Beauvillier 9 (2020)
Brock Nelson 9 (2020)
Jean-Gabriel Pageau 8 (2020)
Anders Lee 7 (2020)
John Tavares 6 (2016)
Mathew Barzal 5 (2020)
Matt Martin 5 (2020)

The Isles are the first team in this year's playoffs to have six players with at least five goals.

Pageau, Pageau, JG Pageau
JG Pageau has 20 goals in 55 career Stanley Cup games. Among active players who have played 55 or fewer games, only Jake Guentzel has scored more goals:
Jake Guentzel 25 goals in 45 games
JG Pageau 20 goals in 55 games
Nathan MacKinnon 20 goals in 40 games
David Pastrnak 20 goals in 52 games
Bobby Ryan 19 goals in 50 games
Mark Stone 17 goals in 52 games
Jamie Benn 17 goals in 51 games

Pageau's 8 playoff goals this summer are tied-4th highest in a player's first playoff with the Isles:
Ray Ferraro 13 (1993)
Steve Thomas 9 (1993)
Patrick Flatley 9 (1984)
JG Pageau 8 (2020)
JP Parise 8 (1975)

All eight of JG's goals have come at even-strength, tying him for 5th in even-strength goals in a single post-season:

Mike Bossy 11 (1982)
Mike Bossy 11 (1983)
Bob Nystrom 9 (1980)
Clark Gillies 9  (1984)
Jean-Gabriel Pageau  8 (2020)
Ray Ferraro 8 (1993
Steve Thomas 8 (1993)
Patrick Flatley 8 (1984)
Mike Bossy 8 (1981)

Lucky 13
Scott Mayfield was EVEN and remains +13.

No Isle has finished a playoff year higher than +6 (Benoit Hogue in 1993) in the Post-Cup era. Denis Potvin (team-leading +20) was one of five Isles +16 or better in 1983.

Mayfield is one of only six players in NHL +13 or better (Victor Hedman +16, Nikita Kucherov +14, Nathan McKinnon +13, Ondrej Palat +13, Brayden Point +13)

Now's the Time, Nine and Nine
Anthony Beauvillier and Brock Nelson each have nine goals this summer, leaving him tied-second in goals by an Islander in a single post-season in the Post-Cup Era.
Ray Ferraro 13 (1993)
Brock Nelson 9 (2020)
Anthony Beauvillier 9 (2020)
Steve Thomas 9 (1993)
JG Pageau 8 (2020)
Bryan Trottier 8 (1987)
Anders Lee 7 (2020)

Hey, Josh Bailey

Devon Toews 8 (2020)
Steve Thomas 8 (1993)

Islander Royalty
Bailey has six multi-assist games this year, joining this list of Islander Royalty:
Bryan Trottier 7 (1982)
Denis Potvin 6 (1981)
Josh Bailey 6 (2020)

Bailey also is the first non-Dynasty Islander with 17 assists in a playoff year:
Bryan Trottier 23(1982)
Bob Bourne 20 (1983)
Josh Bailey 18 (2020)
Mike Bossy 18 (1981)
Bryan Trottier 18 (1981)

Hey, Josh Bailey II
Bailey now has 20 points this summer, tying Ray Ferraro for the highest total by an Islander in a single post-season in the Post-Cup Era.
Ray Ferraro 20 (1993)
Josh Bailey 20 (2020)
Brock Nelson 18 (2020)
Steve Thomas 17 (1993)
Mathew Barzal 15 (2020)

Brock Nelson 16
John Tavares 11
Josh Bailey 10
Anthony Beauvillier 10

Final Four!
The Isles have advanced to the conference final for the first time since 1993.  This ends the longest gap between conference final appearances in NHL history.

Longest Playoff Shutout Streaks by a Goalie:

Billy Smith  136:59 (4/11-4/16/1980)
Robin Lehner 123:29 (4/16-4/26/2019)
The Isles' team shutout record in post-season play is 182:50, set in April 1979 (all vs. Chicago).

Facing Tampa
This is the 3rd meeting of the Isles and Tampa Bay in the playoffs; the Lightning have won the two previous series (2004 Conference Quarter-Final and 2016 Round 2), each in five games.

Barry and Al
2019 NHL Coach of the Year Barry Trotz is only the 2nd coach to lead the Isles to multiple series wins, joining Al Arbour.  Terry Simpson and Jack Capuano are the only other coaches to lead the Isles to a playoff series victory.
