The Skinny: Isles 4, Boston 3 (OT)

"The Skinny"

By Eric Hornick

Second Round Game 2
Isles 4, Boston 3 (OT)
Best-of-7 series tied, 1-1
Casey Cizikas scored 14:48 into overtime as the Islanders earned a split of the two games in Boston with a 4-3 victory in Game 2 of their Second Round series with the Islanders with a 4-3 victory before a capacity crowd of 17,400 at TD Garden.

Trailing 1-0, the Isles scored three times in the middle period, including twice on the power play to take a 3-1 lead.  However, the Bruins tied it with two goals 4:32 apart to send the game into overtime.

That sent the game into overtime where Cizikas' breakaway made the Isle winners for the third time in three overtime games this summer – all on the road.  It was Cizikas' first career overtime goal, and his first playoff goal of any type since April 15, 2015 vs. Washington.

The series now moves to the Coliseum for games 3 and 4 on Thursday and Saturday.

The Skinny
The Isles are 4-4 in game 2's under Barry Trotz… The Isles were credited with 48 hits, giving them 97 for the series and 369 hits through eight games … The Isles have played 38 playoff games under Barry Trotz; only Boston (44), Dallas (40) and St. Louis (39) have played more in that span…Anthony Beauvillier extended his  point streak to six games, matching a career high set last season.…After killing the Penguins' five power plays in games 1-2, the Isles have now allowed six goals in their last 11 times short; Boston scored the tying goal on the power play tonight. …Tuukka Rask played in his 100th career playoff game…That was not only Casey Cizikas' first overtime goal, but it was also his first overtime point as well.  He had taken only one shot on goal in 18 prior overtimes…Cizikas was also the Isles' best in the face-off circle; he has won 64.2% in post-season (2nd to Vegas' Nicolas Roy)...David Pastrnak extended his point streak to four games (5-3-8) with a third period assist while Brad Marchand recorded his 100th and 101st career playoff points in the third period…Patrice Bergeron's tying goal also tied Phil Esposito (46) for 2nd place on the Bruins' post-season goal list ….The Isles have outscored opponents 11-6 in the second period, while the Bruins have now outscored opponents 11-3 in the third period (including 5-0 in this series)… All seven goals went into the same goal…Both Bruins post-season losses have been in overtime.…It is the fifth time that the Isles have won at least their first three post-season games (they won the first 4 OT games in 1993)….This was the 19th-longest game in club history; the Isles are 14-5 in games that have gone at least this long.

First Time in a Long Time
The Isles have won three straight overtime games on the road for the first time since 1987-1993 (4); they have won three straight road OT games in a single playoffs for the first time since 1980 (5-0 on the road that year).
The Isles have scored two power goals in two different games in this post-season; the last time they did that was in 2002 vs. Toronto.

·           Anthony Beauvillier is the first Islander since Bob Bourne (1982 and 1983) to have at least a 6-game point streak in consecutive post-seasons.

Nelson's 19 goals are good for 11th in Islander history and are three goals shy of Duane Sutter's 10th place total (22).  The ten players ahead of Nelson won a combined 38 Stanley Cup rings for the Isles.  Nelson has scored more playoffs goals for the Isles than any other US-born player.

Barry and Al
Barry Trotz is only the 2nd coach to lead the Isles to multiple series wins, joining Al Arbour.  Terry Simpson and Jack Capuano are the only other coaches to lead the Isles to a playoff series victory.  Trotz has won a playoff series in seven consecutive years (four with Washington and three with the Isles).  Arbour did that from 1979-1985 (all with Isles) – no one had done it since, until Trotz came along.

Lou and Bill
Lou Lamoriello's win vs. Pittsburgh was his 30th playoff series win as a General Manager, which is second all-time to Glen Sather (41).  Bill Torrey is third with 28 playoff series wins.
