Erik Karlsson scored at :39 of overtime as the San Jose Sharks handed the Islanders their ninth straight loss with a 2-1 decision before a sellout crowd of 17,255 at UBS Arena.
Mathew Barzal gave the Isles their first-ever lead at UBS just 1:04 into play but Nick Bonino tied the game one second after a power play expired at 9:10 of the period; however, that was the only scoring in regulation.
The Isles earn their first point in nine games (0-8-1) but remain five games under NHL-.500 for the first time since January 16, 2012 (16-21-6).

The Skinny
The Isles have been outscored 34-8 in their nine-game losing streak. It's the first time since a ten-game streak in November/December 2013 (0-8-2) that the Isles have gone nine straight without a win. …Mathew Barzal's goal gave the Isles their first lead in the last 357:48; it was the first goal the Isles scored this season where two defensemen earned assists… The Isles have sold out all five home games but have tied the NHL record for consecutive games without a win to open a new venue (most recently by Columbus in 2000)… Erik Karlsson recorded his seventh career overtime goal; he also scored vs the Isles in overtime on December 5, 2015, as a member of the Ottawa Senators… The Isles were held without a power play for the first time since March 6, 2021, vs. New Jersey…The Sharks improve to 3-0 in games decided by an overtime goal.
