"The Skinny"

By Eric Hornick

Game 35
Isles 4, Philadelphia 3
Zach Parise scored the winning goal with 8:09 to play, breaking a 3-3 tie, as the Isles earned their seventh win in their last nine games (7-2-0) with a 4-3 win over the Philadelphia Flyers before another sellout crowd of 17,255 at UBS Arena.

Gerry Mayhew had scored the tying goal on a 4-on-4 situation early in the third period, setting the stage for Parise's game winner. The Isles are 10-4-1 in their last 15 games and once again move over NHL-.500.  The loss dropped the Isles back to NHL-.500 and back into 9th place (by points percentage) in the conference.

Philadelphia's Keith Yandle played in his 965th consecutive game, breaking the NHL record set by Doug Jarvis in the 1970's/1980s.  Yandle was honored by the crowd during the first tv timeout and was awarded the game's 3rd Star.

On the Farm
Bridgeport fell to 14-18-3-4 on the season following a 5-3 loss to Providence on Saturday. The Baby Isles are 4-2-1-2 in 2022.

Bridgeport will be home again on Sunday afternoon, hosting Springfield at 3pm.

Season Series Stats
Toronto leads the season series 2 games to 0 (and 4 points to 0).  The teams will conclude the season series in T-O on April 17th.

The Leafs have won three straight against the Isles, with Zach Parise's goal tonight being the only one scored by the Isles in the three games.

UP NEXT
TUESDAY, JANUARY 25th–PHILADELPHIA AT ISLANDERS 7:00pm
[MSG+ (pre-game at 7:00), WRHU 88.7 FM, WRCN 103.9FM, ESPN Radio]
The Isles will look to extend their winning streak over the Flyers to eight games as they face Philadelphia for the third time in nine days.

The Isles swept a home-and-home series last week, including a 9-round shootout in Philly; it is one of only three points that the Flyers have gained in their last eleven games (0-8-3).

The Flyers will host Dallas on Monday before coming to UBS. A Star victory would saddle the Flyers with a franchise record-matching 12 game winless streak. Keith Yandle would tie Doug Jarvis' NHL record for consecutive games played (964) if he appears in Monday night's game, leaving him position to set the record at UBS on Tuesday.

The Skinny: Isles 4, Arizona 0

"The Skinny"

By Eric Hornick

Game 33
Isles 4, Arizona 0
Scott Mayfield and Austin Czarnik scored in a 2:58 span late in the first period to break a scoreless tie and Ilya Sorokin made 17 saves for his fourth shutout of the season as the Islanders blanked the Arizona Coyotes 4-0 before another sellout crowd of 17,255 at UBS Arena.

Brock Nelson scored twice in the third period, with Josh Bailey earning assists on both goal as the Isles improved to 6-1-0 in their last seven and 9-3-1 in their last 13 games.  They have also earned at least a point 13 times in the last 16 games (9-3-4).  With the victory the Isles are over NHL-.500 for the first time since a loss in New Jersey on November 11th dropped them to 5-4-2.

The Isles moved ahead of both Philadelphia and New Jersey in the standings with tonight's win. They also now have a better winning percentage than Detroit or Columbus as they moved into 9th place (by points percentage) in the conference.

The Skinny
The Isles blanked the Coyotes in both meetings this season, outscoring Arizona 7-0… The Isles have allowed only eleven goals in their last seven games…Josh Bailey has eight points in the last seven games (2-6-8)… Phil Kessel played in his 939th consecutive game (3rd all-time); he is 25 games behind Doug Jarvis' NHL record, but Keith Yandle is in line to break that record on Tuesday at UBS…The first three Islander goals included a point from a defenseman, extending a streak to seven straight goals with a d-men point; Nelson's second goal ended the streak…The Isles had only three multi-point games from defenseman all season (two from Noah Dobson and one from Scott Mayfield) before Mayfield and Adam Pelech both did so tonight; Pelech and Nick Leddy (2-25-2021 vs. Boston) were the last pair of Islander d-men with multiple points in a game… Pelech has a point in three straight games since being named to the NHL All-Star Game; it is the first time in his career he has done so; Bailey and Anthony Beauvillier also extended their point streaks to three game...Ilya Sorokin set a career high with his fourth shutout; seven of his 24 career wins have been by shutout.  He joins Chico Resch as the only goalies in Isles history to earn seven shutouts in his first 45 career games…Brock Nelson has a club-leading 13 goals in only 24 games this season; he is on pace for 39 goals if he were to play the remaining 48 games. His career high of 26 was set in 2015-16 and matched in the COVID-shortened 2019-20 season….Austin Czarnik scored a goal and went +3 in his return to the lineup; Czarnik now leads all Islander forwards with a +6 rating...The Isles had a season-high 21 shots in the third period...Matt Martin fought Liam O'Brien for the second time this season; O'Brien now leads the NHL with nine fights.

UP NEXT
SATURDAY, JANUARY 22nd–TORONTO AT ISLANDERS 7:00pm
[MSG+2 (pre-game at 6:30), WRHU 88.7 FM, WRCN 103.9FM, ESPN Radio]
The Isles will look to extend their winning streak to four games as they welcome the Toronto Maple Leafs back to UBS Arena on Saturday.  It will be the second meeting of the teams this season as the Leafs become the first opponent to visit UBS for a second time.

The Leafs have shut out the Islanders in their last two meetings (Michael Hutchinson on January 4, 2020, and Joseph Woll on November 22, 2021); their game in November, which was the second in UBS history, was played with six Islanders on the COVID list.  The Leafs won that game 3-0.

4-0 for 40
My son Adam noted that the 4-0 victory was fitting, given that the game marked my 40th anniversary on Islander telecasts.  Thanks to our entire MSG Networks team for making the night so special to me and to my family for all their support (and for sneaking pictures to our crew for the pre-game feature)!

And Finally…
We received word during the game of the passing of Islander legend, Hockey Hall of Famer, and humanitarian Clark Gillies. Always a gentleman, always an Islander.  May he rest in peace.

It was 40 years ago tonight...

It was January 21, 1982.  It feels like yesterday.

That Thursday night the Isles swamped Pittsburgh 6-1 at the Coliseum, to begin their record-setting 15-game winning streak.

The game was scoreless into the 2nd period, before Brent Sutter and Bryan Trottier sandwiched goals around a Rick MacLeish tally.  It was Trottier’s 250th NHL goal and began his club record 25-game point streak.

The Isles blew the game open early in the 3rd on goals by Bobby Bourne and Clark Gillies.  Bourne and Billy Carroll would score late in the game and the Isles had their 6-1 victory.

The Isles actually scored 3 goals on the same 4 on 4.  Pat Boutette and Denis Potvin, playing his 600th NHL game, were both given double minors at 18:08 of the 2nd period.  Trottier scored 20 seconds later and then Bourne and Gillies (whose children would later marry) completed a 3 goal in 3:27 outburst.

Gillies, Trottier, and Bossy all extended point stretches to 15 of 16 games.

Roland Melanson stopped 23 of 24 shots.

January 21, 1982 Box Score

It was the start of one of the most dominating stretches by any team in any sport.

Try these numbers:

  • The Isles won 15 straight, outscoring their opponents by a combined 97-35--an average of 6.53-2.33.
  • They won by at least 3 goals in all but three games in the streak.
  • 9-0 at home, 6-0 on the road.

John Tonelli scored the winning goal of the 15th game at 19:13 of the third period --remember, there was no OT in those days.  That win established the NHL record.  It was one of only two one-goal wins during the streak.  The other was a 7-6 win over Washington in which all of the goals were scored in the first two periods. The Isles have not won a 7-6 game in regulation time since. [They've won 4, all in overtime --most recently in February 2011 in Buffalo]

They beat the Penguins 4 times in the streak, before Pittsburgh would break the spell on February 21, 1982 [4-3]

After losing to Pittsburgh, the Isles went 7-0-1 in their next 8 [7-0-2 in their next 9].  Their 24 [and 25] game stretches were 22-1-1 [and 22-1-2].

Here's a look at the winning goal for game #15:

With Howie and Butch right after the Isles eliminated Florida in 2016

And oh yes, one other streak began that night.

A high school student made his debut as the statistician on home telecasts.  I've never left.

With Jiggs and Brendan in 2017

Over those 40 years, only three men have been the play-by-play voice of Islander television: Jiggs McDonald, Howie Rose, and Brendan Burke.

I went to high school with Jiggs' daughter, my kids followed Howie's kids through the same schools, and now I work with a man who wasn't even born when I began this wonderful ride.

Before anyone knew of a blog or of twitter, there was The Skinny
(here from our post-game show following game 6 in 1993)
So, when MSG+ hits the air tonight (pre-game at 7:00, opening face-off at 7:30) I'll be directly to Brendan's left - with one simple goal - to make our broadcasts just a little bit better!

And then, sometime after midnight, there will another edition of The Skinny.

Had COVID not messed with the schedule, it would have been the 800th consecutive edition. Instead it will be #790 - and we'll hit 800 in early February!

Earlier in the week, Andrew Gross was kind enough to feature me in his Island Ice podcast -  hope you get a chance to enjoy it here: Island Ice
