Zach Parise and Josh Bailey each scored twice, and Kyle Palmieri scored the only goal of the shootout as the Islanders defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-4 before a crowd of 15,924 at UBS Arena.
Ilya Sorokin set career highs in shots faced (47) and saves (43) before holding the Penguins scoreless in the shootout to record his 24th win of the season.
The Isles improve to 34-29-9, matching a season high at five games over NHL-.500. The Isles are 6-2-0 in their last eight games overall; after opening 0-4-3 in their first seven games at UBS, the Isles are 19-9-1 in their last 29 home games.

The Skinny
The Isles are 13-5-1 in their last 19 games… The Isles have been outscored 15-12 in the final minutes of periods this season (excluding empty nets) …The Isles are a perfect 27-0-0 in games that they have a 2-0 lead at any point; this was only the second time all season (3/31 vs CBJ) that the opponent tied the game at any point…Zach Parise recorded his 52nd career multi-goal game while Josh Bailey recorded his 12th…The Isles are 4-33 in shootout attempts; however, Kyle Palmieri, who recorded his 4th career game-deciding goal, is 2-2 on the season and 7-31 on his career…The Penguins elected not to use Rickard Rakell in the shootout; Rakell is 4-4 this season in shootouts...Noah Dobson's assist was his team-leading 15th power play assist and team-leading 17th power play point. Dobson is the first Islander defenseman to reach those totals on the power play since Nick Leddy had 16 assists and 19 points in 2015-16…Sidney Crosby had a pair of assists to reach 1,402 points, including 125 against the Isles. Crosby now has 77 points after having only two points through Thanksgiving…Matt Martin played in 675th game, one more than Billy Smith did as an Isle. Martin is 10th in games among Islander skaters...Jean-Gabriel Pageau won 19 of 30 faceoffs; both figures are the highest for any Islander this season.
First Times in a Long Time
• Zach Parise scored both shorthanded and on the power play. It is the first time in his career that he has done so in the same game. Frans Nielsen (2-23-2016 vs. Minnesota) was the last Islander to do so while Michael Grabner (4-5-2011 at Boston) was the last Islander to do so in a single period. It is the 22nd time in club history a player has scored both a power play goal and a shorthanded goal in the same game.
• Josh Bailey is the first Islander to score two unassisted goals in a game since Brock Nelson did so on January 8, 2019, vs. Carolina.
The Illnesses
The Penguins played most of the first period with 11 forwards and the rest of the game with only 10 after first Bryan Rust and then Evan Rodrigues left the game with non-Covid illnesses.
Home is Where The Sorokin Is
Ilya Sorokin is 13-4-3 at UBS Arena, with a 1.96 GAA and a .934 save percentage.
Since February 1st, he has been even better, going 7-1-1 in nine home starts (1.81 GAA, .944 save percentage); his goals against average is the best in the NHL among goalies who have played at least two home games in that stretch .
Great in the Nets
• Ilya Sorokin is 7-2-0 in his last nine games; he has allowed just 16 goals in those nine games (1.84, .945). His goals against average is the best in the NHL among goalies who have played at least four full games in that stretch while his save percentage is tied for first with Darcy Kuemper.
• Semyon Varlamov is 6-3-1 in his last ten decisions.
PK is More Than Okay
The Isles killed four of their five penalties and have now killed 25 of 26 over their last eight games and 64 of 71 in the last 22 games (90.1%). At home they are even better, having killed 37 of 40 since the beginning of February; their 92.5% home PK in that span tied-second in the NHL (Carolina 94.1%).
And How About That Home PP?
Since the beginning of February, the Isles home PP has converted at a 32.4% rate (12-37). Only Florida (17-45, 37.8%) has had a better home power play in that stretch.
Zach Attack
Zach Parise scored twice to give him 406 career goals, tying him for 98th place all-time with Rod Gilbert and John LeClair; he is one goal behind Marian Gaborik and two behind Patrik Elias and Ray Ferraro.

The Isles begin a three-game road trip as they face the Pittsburgh Penguins in the back end of a home-and home series.
It is the Islanders' only visit of the season to Pittsburgh; the Penguins are one of two Metro opponents that the Isles are facing only three times this season (Carolina is the other) in order to accommodate the two games added to the schedule against Seattle.
