In one of the most incredible comebacks in franchise history, Scott Mayfield and Anthony Beauvillier scored 17 seconds apart in the third period as the Isles rallied for five straight goals to erase a 3-0 Avalanche lead and defeat the Stanley Cup Champions 5-4 before a sellout crowd of 17,255 at UBS Arena.

Colorado had taken a 3-0 lead midway through the second period before Noah Dobson got the Isles on the board.  Zach Parise and Brock Nelson, the latter credited with the game-winner into an empty net, also scored for the Isles, who recorded their third straight win.

The Isles have dominated in the third period of the three wins, outscoring three teams who combined for seven playoff series wins a season ago by a 9-1 margin.

The Isles begin November with a three-game road trip, starting Tuesday in Chicago.

The Isles now lead the NHL in goals from defensemen with nine and their 23 points is second only to the Avs' 24... 

Mathew Barzal now has ten assists in the first nine games; Barzal is the first Islander since Vladimir Malakhov (1993-94; 11 assists) with at least ten helpers thru the Isles' first nine games... More First Times in a Long Time

The Isles have scored nine goals in their last three third periods.  The last time that they did this was in March 2014, when they scored ten goals in a three-game span (including seven in Vancouver – see above).

The Isles scored an Empty Net Goal for the second straight game.  The last time the Isles scored ENG's on both ends of a back-to-back was April 11-12, 2002 (Roman Hamrlik and Michael Peca).

The Isles now have seven players with at least three goals (Boston is the only other team to do so).  It is the first time since the 1989-90 season that they have had at least seven players with three or more goals in the first nine games of the season.

Josh Bailey played in his 1,001st NHL game after being honored by the team in a pre-game ceremony.

Offense from Defense

The Islander defense have scored nine goals; they didn't score their ninth goal last season until January 18th.  The Isles have two defensemen with three goals on the season; last season that did not happen until game 47 (February 24th in San Jose).

The nine defense goals lead the NHL; the Isles also had two assists from defensemen, raising the season total to 23 points for the defense.

Zach Attack 

Zach Parise scored his 411th career goal, good for 8th among actives and breaking a tie with Ray Bourque for 94th all-time.  Next-up are Garry Unger and Islander Assistant Coach John MacLean, who are tied for 92nd place with 413 goals.

Ilya Sorokin went 13-5-4 at UBS Arena last season and is 2-2-0 this season, allowing just six goals in the four games.

On the Farm

Bridgeport extended their point streak to six games (5-0-1-0) with a 6-3 win over Lehigh Valley on Saturday.

For the second straight night, the Baby Isles got goals from six different players, including a power play marker for the first professional goal from Aatu Raty   Ruslan Iskhakov, Andy Andreoff and Samuel Bolduc each had three points.  Ishakov now leads all AHL rookies in both assists (7) and points (11).

Bridgeport returns home to begin a three game homestand with a School Day Matinee, at 10:30 on Tuesday against Charlotte.

Season Series Stats

The Isles lead the season series, 1 game to 0 (and 2 points to 0).  The teams will complete their season series on December 19th at Ball Arena.

Josh Bailey scored the game-winning goal in his 1,000th NHL game and Brock Nelson scored twice as the Isles defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 6-2 before a sellout crowd of 18,680 at PNC Arena in Raleigh.

The Isles scored the game's final four goals, including all three goals scored in the third period after Bailey's winning tally at 16:26 of the second period.

The Isles head home to face the Stanley Cup Champion Colorado Avalanche on Saturday.

The Isles killed all three Hurricane power plays (including a 1:23 5-on-3) and have killed 28 of 28 this season to establish a new NHL RECORD by not allowing a power play goal in the first eight games…The Isles have played 49:45 short this season without allowing a goal; they have been 2-men short for 3:18 (most in NHL)...Mathew Barzal now has nine assists in the first eight games; Barzal is the first Islander since Vladimir Malakhov (1993-94) with at least nine helpers thru the Isles' first eight games... First Times in a Long Time

• The Isles scored six goals, matching the most that they have ever scored in the state of North Carolina (also 4/2/04 and 1/22/08)

• It was the first time the Isles scored even five goals in a road game vs. Carolina since October 10, 2014, when they did so in a season-opening win that marked the debuts of Johnny Boychuk and Nick Leddy on the ice and Shannon Hogan in the MSG studio.

• The Isles defeated the Hurricanes by at least four goals in Carolina for only the second time ever (the other was on October 17, 2001; a 4-0 win in Peter Laviolette's sixth game as Isles coach).

NHL History Lessons

• The Isles have established an NHL record by not allowing a power play goal in their first eight games.  (Records go back to 1977-78).  Minnesota set the previous record of seven in 2008-09 and Detroit equaled it six years later.

• Josh Bailey is (fittingly) the 12th player in NHL history (and first Islander) have been credited with game-winning goal in game 1,000.  Carolina's Brent Burns, whose 2-2 goal set the stage for Bailey's winner, also was credited with the winning goal in his 1,000th game.

• (thanks NHL) – This was the 4th career Sebastian Aho vs. Sebastian Aho game; they are one of nine sets of players with the same name to face each other.  (The record of 19 is shared by Bob Kelly/Bob Kelly and Greg Adams/Greg Adams).  No other Islander has ever faced a player with whom he shares a name .

Josh Bailey played in his 1,000 NHL game to join Bryan Trottier (1,123) and Denis Potvin (1,060) as the only Islanders to reach that total. Bailey is in his 15th season with the Isles, which ties Potvin and Trottier for the most by an Islander skater. Billy Smith played 17 seasons for the team.  Bailey is the 369th skater (along with three goaltenders) in league history to have played 1,000 games.

On the Farm

Bridgeport saw their four-game winning streak end, but extended their point streak to five, with a 7-6 overtime loss in Springfield.

The Baby Isles got goals from six different players, including William Dufour and Simon Holmstrom; Denis Cholowski had three helpers while Aatu Raty added two.

Bridgeport plays at Lehigh Valley on Saturday. Their next home game is a School Day Matinee, at 10:30 on Tuesday, November 1st against Charlotte.

Ilya Sorokin made 41 saves for his 11th career shutout and Kyle Palmieri scored his first two goals of the season as the Islanders blanked the rival Rangers 3-0 before a sellout crowd of 17,255 at UBS Arena. 

Josh Bailey, playing in his 999th NHL game also scored for the Isles while Adam Pelech and Jean-Gabriel Pageau each added a pair of assists to support Sorokin, who improved to 3-1-0 against the Blueshirts while blanking the Rangers for the first time this season.

The Isles head to Carolina to begin a back-to-back set with the Canes and Avs on Friday.

The Isles killed all three Rangers power plays and have killed 25 of 25 this season; St. Louis (11-11) is the other NHL team not to allow a power play goal…The Isles have matched the NHL record by not  allowing a power play goal in the first seven games. ..Mathew Barzal tied Anders Lee for the team lead in points (7) while Barzal leads the team with seven assists.. The Isles do not have a goal from a center in the first seven games.…The Isles have allowed just one first period goal in five home games this season … The Isles scored first for the second time this season…Casey Cizikas played in his 670th game, passing John Tavares for 12th among Islander skaters…Adam Pelech had his second multi-assist game of the season…Jaroslav Halak is 0-3-2 against the Isles since leaving the team as a free agent in 2018…Kyle Palmieri recorded his third two-goal games as an Islander; he now has 27 career multi-goal games (including two hat tricks). Palmieri didn't score his second goal last season until his 30th game (February 15 vs Buffalo).

Lots of Shots Stopped

The Isles have had only 11 games in their history (10-0-1) where they allowed at least 40 shots but no goals; Ilya Sorokin (41 saves tonight) is the only goalie in club history with at least three of them (also 10/24/2021 at Vegas (42 saves) and 4/15/2022 at Montreal (44 saves).

It was the second time that an Islander goalie made at least 40 saves in a shutout win over the Rangers (Jaroslav Halak 2/15/2018 at Barclays Center -50 saves).

NHL History Lesson

The Isles have tied an NHL record by not allowing a power play goal in their first seven games.  (Records go back to 1977-78).  Minnesota set the record in 2008-09 and Detroit equaled it six years later.

Beating The Blueshirts

Ilya Sorokin is 3-1-0 against the Rangers in his career with a 1.99 goals-against average.  However, that includes his NHL debut, when he allowed five goals as an emergency starter.  In the last three games vs. the Rangers, Ilya is 3-0-0 with a 0.99 goals-against average.

Anton Lundell scored :39 into play to give the Panthers the lead and the Islanders could never catch them as the Florida Panthers defeated the Isles 3-2 before a crowd of 16,342 at FLA Live Arena. 

Eetu Luosarinen and Ryan Lomberg also scored for Florida, offsetting a pair of power play goals from Anders Lee.

The Isles have lost three straight game and head home to face the Rangers for the first of only three meetings this season on Wednesday.

A mid-game scoring change made Eetu Luostarinen's goal unassisted; it is the first time the Isles have allowed two first period unassisted goals since November 19, 2011, at the Coliseum against Boston.  It had not happened in an Islander road game since a February 7, 1995, game at the Thunderdome in Tampa Bay.

On the Farm

Bridgeport is 4-1-0 to open their season after completing a sweep of their 3-in-3 weekend a 5-2 win over Hartford. 

Cory Schneider made 34 saves and Paul Thompson, making his season debut, scored the winning goal with 5:31 to play.

The Baby Isles will be on the road next weekend, playing at Springfield on Friday and Lehigh Valley on Saturday. Their next home game is a School Day Matinee, at 10:30 on Tuesday, November 1st against Charlotte.

Nicholas Paul's second period buzzer-beater turned out to be the Game-Winning Goal as the Tampa Bay Lightning defeated the Isles 5-3 before a sellout crowd of 19,092 at Amalie Arena. 

Paul, Brayden Point and Brandon Hagel all finished with a goal and an assist to hand the Isles their second straight loss.  Matt Martin and Ryan Pulock each scored unassisted goals for the Isles, while Anthony Beauvillier added his 2nd goal of the season.

The Isles conclude their first road trip of the season in Florida at 5pm on Sunday.

The Skinny             

The Isles killed all three Tampa Bay power plays and have killed 18 of 18 this season; Detroit (13-13) and St. Louis (4-4) are the other NHL teams not to allow a power play goal.  It was the first time this season that Tampa Bay failed to score a power play goal ..The Isles' identity line combined for 24 hits; it was the first time that Cal Clutterbuck (10), Matt Martin (7), and Casey Cizikas (7) each had at least seven hits in the same game…Clutterbuck had at least ten hits in a game for the first time since 2015 and the third time as an Islander while Martin scored for the 7th time in 32 games against Tampa Bay…Ilya Sorokin allowed a goal in the last second of a period for the second time in his career (also February 15, 2022 in Buffalo)..,Brock Nelson tied Anders Lee for the team scoring lead with his 5th points; unlike previous Octobers all of Nelson's points this month have been assists…The Isles held Steven Stamkos off the scoreboard, ending his goal and point streaks at five games…Victor Hedman earned a single assist for the fifth straight game…There were three combined goals in the first period after the Isles and their opponents combined for just three goals in the first four games...Amalie Arena was sold out for the 288th consecutive game (regular season/playoffs, not including COVID-limited games).

Offense from Defense

The Islander defense have scored seven goals; they didn't score their seventh goal last season until January 1st.  The Isles have three defensemen with two goals on the season; last season that did not happen until game 38 (February 1st vs. Ottawa).

Ilya Sorokin went 13-5-4 at UBS Arena last season and is 1-2-0 this season, allowing just six goals in the three games.

Jack Hughes broke a scoreless tie early in the second period and Ondrej Palat added a pair of goals as the New Jersey Devils held the Isles to 17 shots in a 4-1 victory before a crowd of 16,046 at UBS Arena. 

Palat only scored twice in 23 regular season games with the Lightning against the Isles but matched that total in his first games with the Devils. Anders Lee broke up Mackenzie Blackwood's shutout with 3:15 to play and Ilya Sorokin on the bench for an extra attacker.

The Isles finish their season-opening homestand with a 2-2-0 record. Their next five opponents all won at least one playoff series last season.

Oliver Wahlstrom scored twice, including the winning goal with 55.4 seconds left in the middle session as the Isles earned a 5-2 victory over the San Jose Sharks before a crowd of 13,892 at UBS Arena. 

Semyon Varlamov made 26 saves in his season debut to earn his 262nd career victory; Noah Dobson ,Brock Nelson  and Adam Pelech each added a pair of assists as the Isles have now scored 12 goals over the last two games.  It is the first time since November 2018 that the Islanders have totaled a dozen goals in a two-game span.

The Isles are 2-1-0 with one game to play on their season-opening homestand.

The Skinny            

The Isles have scored thirteen goals in three games – it's only the second time in the last 32 years that they have scored that often in their first three games.…Oliver Wahlstrom, who is still the youngest Islander, now has seven goals in 14 career October game; it was his third career two-goal game.  The Sharks haven't opened 0-5-0 for the first time in their history…The Isles finished with 46 shots and 80 attempts.  The 46 shots are their most ever at UBS Arena while the 21 shots in the second period match their highest total in their new building (1/21/2022 vs Arizona)…They had only one game with more shots on goal all last season, firing 47 in San Jose last February; like tonight, James Reimer was in goal that night as well…Noah Dobson has a three-game point streak to open the season (he has had two longer streaks- both were five games); no Islander defenseman has ever had a point in the team's first four games...Brock Nelson had a three-game assist streak (just one game shy of career high, set in November 2019)…Anders Lee passed Kyle Okposo and Stefan Persson for 16th place on the points list (366)…Four Islanders finished with multiple points…The Isles won all six draws on their power play and scored twice in the second period off of even-strength face-off wins…The Isles held Logan Couture (8 goals in 15 prior games vs the Isles) to no points and two shots on goal…Semyon Varlamov started last season 0-5-1 and did not earn his first win until mid-December.

Lots of Shots

The Isles have 117 shots through three games (39.0 per game); last season they averaged 28.9 shots per games (30th in the NHL).

The 117 shots through three games are the second-highest total in team history (119 in 1995).

Offense from Defense

The Islander defense have scored six goals; they didn't score their sixth goal last season until December 30th.  The Isles have three defensemen with two goals on the season; last season that did not happen until game 38 (February 1st vs. Ottawa).

While the Islander defense did not score a goal in this game, they did contribute three assists.

Home is Where The Sorokin Is

Ilya Sorokin went 13-5-4 at UBS Arena last season and is 1-1-0 this season, allowing just three goals in the two games. 

Zach Attack

Zach Parise now has 409 career goals, breaking a tie for 95th place all-time with Patrik Elias and Ray Ferraro. Ray Bourque has 410 goals and sits 94th.

Hey, Josh Bailey

Josh Bailey played in his 996th NHL game as he looks to join Bryan Trottier (1,123) and Denis Potvin (1,060) as the only Islanders to reach that total. Bailey is beginning his 15th season with the Isles, which ties Potvin and Trottier for the most by an Islander skater. Billy Smith played 17 seasons for the team.  Only 367 skaters and three goaltenders in league history have played in 1,000 games; Minnesota's Alex Goligoski (999) could reach 1,000 prior to Bailey.
