The Skinny: Florida 3, Isles 2

"The Skinny"

By Eric Hornick

Game 6
Florida 3, Isles 2
Anton Lundell scored :39 into play to give the Panthers the lead and the Islanders could never catch them as the Florida Panthers defeated the Isles 3-2 before a crowd of 16,342 at FLA Live Arena.

Eetu Luosarinen and Ryan Lomberg also scored for Florida, offsetting a pair of power play goals from Anders Lee.

The Isles have lost three straight game and head home to face the Rangers for the first of only three meetings this season on Wednesday.

The Scoring:
1st Period
Anton Lundell (1) 00:39 NYI 0,FLA 1
Eetu Luostarinen (2) 09:13 NYI 0,FLA 2

2nd Period
Anders Lee (3) Mathew Barzal (5), Noah Dobson (3) 04:27 NYI 1,FLA 2 PPG

3rd Period
Ryan Lomberg (1) Colin White (3), Eetu Luostarinen (3) 02:56 NYI 1,FLA 3
Anders Lee (4) Mathew Barzal (6), Brock Nelson (6) 09:07 NYI 2,FLA 3 PPG

The Skinny
The Isles killed all four Florida power plays and have killed 22 of 22 this season; Detroit (17-17) and St. Louis (4-4) are the other NHL teams not to allow a power play goal…It is the first time in Islander history that they have not allowed a power play goal in the first six games. ..Semyon Varlamov allowed a goal in the first minute of the game for only the second time as an Islander (Jacob Bryson – 3/6/22 for Buffalo)…Anders Lee now leads the team in goals (4) and points (7) while Brock Nelson and Mathew Barzal are tied for the team lead in assists; no Islander center has scored a goal in the first six games…Lee scored two power play goals in a game for the fourth time in his career (no Islander has scored three power play goals in a game since Miroslav Satan did so in 2006)…The Isles allowed just one goal in their four game homestand but allowed four first period goals in the games in Tampa Bay and Florida. … The Isles have allowed the opening goal in four straight games. (1-3-0)…Casey Cizikas played in his 669th game, tying John Tavares for 12th among Islander skaters…Spencer Knight recorded his 25th career win in game #38; only two Americans (Frank Brimsek – 34 and Jim Carey -37) did so in fewer games.

First Time in a Long Time
A mid-game scoring change made Eetu Luostarinen's goal unassisted; it is the first time the Isles have allowed two first period unassisted goals since November 19, 2011, at the Coliseum against Boston.  It had not happened in an Islander road game since a February 7, 1995, game at the Thunderdome in Tampa Bay.

L of a Game
There were four players in this game with a surname beginning with the letter "L".  Each of the three Panthers scored a goal, while Anders Lee scored twice for the Isles.

Offense from Defense
The Islander defense have scored seven goals; they didn't score their seventh goal last season until January 1st.  The Isles have three defensemen with two goals on the season; last season that did not happen until game 38 (February 1st vs. Ottawa).

The seven defense goals lead the NHL; Noah Dobson's assist gives the defense 13 points this season.

Home is Where The Sorokin Is
Ilya Sorokin went 13-5-4 at UBS Arena last season and is 1-2-0 this season, allowing just six goals in the three games.

Zach Attack
Zach Parise now has 409 career goals, good for 8th among actives and 95th place all-time. Ray Bourque has 410 goals and sits 94th.
