The Skinny: Isles 7, Anaheim 1

"The Skinny"

By Eric Hornick

Game 2
Isles 7, Anaheim 1
Scott Mayfield and Robin Salo each scored twice, and Noah Dobson made it a 5-goal game for the defense as the Isles earned Lane Lambert his first win as an NHL coach with a 7-1 victory over the Anaheim Ducks before a crowd of 16,487 at UBS Arena.

Ilya Sorokin made 22 saves as he earned his 3rd win in as many starts against Anaheim. Oliver Wahlstrom and Anthony Beauvillier also scored for the Isles, who scored at least seven goals for the first time in 103 regular season games (8-4 win over Washington on April 1, 2021).

The Isles are 1-1-0 halfway through their season-opening four game homestand.

Robin Salo (2) Oliver Wahlstrom (1), Brock Nelson (2) 19:02 ANA 1,NYI 7

The Skinny
Anders Lee recorded an assist in each period; it is the fourth time in his career that he has had at least three assists… Lee, who passed fellow Islander captain Kenny Jonsson for 17th place in games played (598-597), also tied Kyle Okposo and Stefan Persson for 16th place on the points list (366)…Six Islanders finished with multiple points…The Isles have scored eight goals in two games – most through two games since they scored nine in 2014-2015, which was the last time the Isles opened 2-0-0…Oliver Wahlstrom now has 5 goals in 13 career October games…It was the first career two-goal game for both Scott Mayfield (career goals 20 and 21) and Robin Salo (career goals 2 and 3)…Mayfield has scored three goals in the last three games he played, including his final appearance last season…Wahlstrom matched a career-high with his tenth two-point game.

First Times in a Long Time
The Isles' defense scored five goals, including two each for Scott Mayfield and Robin Salo. It is the first time that either happened since January 12, 1993, vs. Calgary, when Vladimir Malakhov and Scott Lachance scored twice, and Jeff Norton also scored.  (Denis Potvin and Jean Potvin scored at least two goals each in the same game on two occasions.)
Robin Salo scored twice and went +4, becoming the first defensemen other than Denis Potvin to reach at least those totals in the same game.  Potvin did it three times, most recently on December 11, 1982, when he had two goals and went +6 in a 7-1 win over the Devils.
Salo and Scott Mayfield became the first Islander defensemen with a multi-goal game since Nick Leddy on October 25, 2019, in Ottawa.
Noah Dobson is the first Islander to score in each of the first two games of the season since Chris Campoli in 2007.  No other Islander defenseman has done that.
The Isles scored seven goals in the second game of a season for the sixth time in club history, and the first since October 10, 1987, in Los Angeles.  The Isles have never scored seven goals in an opener.
The Isles defense scored two goals in the third period (both by Robin Salo); it is the since time since March 2, 2017 (Nick Leddy and Dennis Seidenberg in Dallas) that they had two third period goals from a defender. Uwe Krupp was the last Islander defenseman to score twice in a third period (February 24, 1994, in Philadelphia).
Salo is only the 2nd Islander defenseman to score two of his first three career goals in the same game (Denis Potvin – October 27, 1973, vs. Rangers) and the first to do so in the same period.

NHL Record Tied
When a scoring change gave Noah Dobson the Isles' second goal it meant that the first three goals of the season were all scored by defensemen, matching the NHL record set by the Rangers in October 1984, and equaled by the Kings in October 1992 and the Sharks in October 1999.

Oliver Wahlstrom's breakaway goal ended the possibility of the Isles breaking the record.

Sweet 16's
Every Islander but Noah Dobson and Alexander Romanov were "+" (they were even); every Islander but Matt Martin and Casey Cizikas had a shot on goal.  On the other side, every Duck was a "-"; Dimitri Kulikov was on ice for five Islander goals and finished -4.

Offense from Defense
The Islander defense have scored six goals; they didn't score their sixth goal last season until December 30th.  The Isles have three defensemen with two goals on the season; last season that did not happen until game 38 (February 1st vs. Ottawa).

Home is Where The Sorokin Is
Ilya Sorokin went 13-5-4 at UBS Arena last season and is 1-1-0 this season, allowing just three goals in the two games.

Zach Attack
Zach Parise has 408 career goals, tying him for 95th place all-time with Patrik Elias and Ray Ferraro.  Ray Bourque has 410 goals and sits 94th.

Hey, Josh Bailey
Josh Bailey played in his 995th NHL game as he looks to join Bryan Trottier (1,123) and Denis Potvin (1,060) as the only Islanders to reach that total. Bailey is beginning his 15th season with the Isles, which ties Potvin and Trottier for the most by an Islander skater. Billy Smith played 17 seasons for the team.  Only 367 skaters and three goaltenders in league history have played in 1,000 games; Minnesota's Alex Goligoski (998 tonight) could reach 1,000 prior to Bailey.
