Damon Severson's shot deflected in off Ryan Pulock's skate 5:43 into the third period and that was the only goal to beat either netminder, as the Columbus Blue Jackets defeated the Isles 2-0 before a crowd of 14,015 at Nationwide Arena.

This was a 'homer' series last season, with the home team winning all three games; the Isles' only win came in last season's home opener.

The Isles have struggled in Buffalo in recent years, going 0-5-2 in their last seven visits. Overall, the Isles are 2-5-1 in their last eight games; they have not scored on the power play in that span, going 0-19.

The Skinny: Anaheim 3, Isles 1

"The Skinny"

By Eric Hornick

Game 9
Anaheim 3, Isles 1
Troy Terry's 100th NHL goal was Anaheim's second power play goal of the night, and it turned out to be the game-winner as the Ducks defeated the Isles 3-1 before a crowd of 14,234 at UBS Arena.

Mathew Barzal's third period goal cut the deficit in half, but Frank Vatrano hit the empty-net in the final minute to hand the Isles their third straight regulation loss on home ice.

The Isles are 3-4-2 on the season and head to Columbus for a game on Wednesday that begins three-game road and a stretch where they will play 9 of 11 on the road.

The Isles, who have points in three straight road games (2-0-1), have lost three straight games at home… The Isles have been held to one goal or fewer four times this season (0-3-1) …The Isles were shorthanded three times, allowing two goals; this ends the longest stretch to start an Islander season of being short two times or fewer.…This was the first time that the Isles have scored in a game, but never led.. …At least one Isles defenseman had earned a point on 12 of the last 13 goals (1-12-13) …Troy Terry has earned a single point in eight straight games (5-3-8). ….The Isles have scored only three second period goals this season – all on the road…The Isles allowed an empty-net goal for the third straight game…The Isles set season highs in shots for both a periods (18) and game (41)…The Isles are 1-3-1 at home (3 points). Other than the COVID-compromised season of 2020-21 (0-4-1), the Isles have been over NHL-.500 after five games in every season since 2013-14…Troy Terry is the 11th player to score 100 goals for the Ducks.

It is only the 4th time in that span that the Isles have had an 8-game streak at any point in a single season; the club record of 15 was set in 2022:
15  1/21/2022 – 2/24/2022
9    3/27/2023-10/14/2023  (single season streak – 8)

The Isles are 3-3-2 on the season and host Anaheim on Tuesday before beginning a stretch where they will play 9 of 11 on the road.

…Matt Martin made his season debut after being signed off the practice squad.

The Skinny Welcomes back Matt Martin

The Isles announced that Matt Martin has agreed to a one-year deal with the team.

Martin becomes the active NHL leader in hits with 3,854; he is 175 behind former linemate Cal Clutterbuck for the official NHL record (since hits became an official stat).  Martin takes the active leader role away from Alex Ovechkin (3,654).   His 3,407 hits as an Islander are a club record.

With 75 games remaining in this season, Martin would need to appear in 45 of them to reach the 1,000 NHL game mark.

He starts the day 2nd among active Islanders and 7th-all-time in games played, although Casey Cizikas was poised to tie him tonight:

        6. Brock Nelson 847 *** 7. Matt Martin 823 *** 8. Casey Cizikas 822

When he appears in his first game, it will be his 14th season as an Islander, tying Casey Cizikas and Bobby Nystrom.  Among skaters, only Denis Potvin, Bryan Trottier, and Josh Bailey appeared in more (all 15 seasons).  Billy Smith played in the first 17 Islander seasons.

Isles 4, New Jersey 3 (OT)
This time the Devils could not tie it. Bo Horvat scored 1:08 into overtime as the Islanders earned a 4-3 win over New Jersey before a crowd of 14,870 at Prudential Center.

Three times the Isles took one-goal leads only to have New Jersey to tie it, but Horvat's 9th overtime goal (4th for the Isles) decided matters.

The Isles are 3-2-2 on the season and host Florida on Saturday to conclude the first back-to-back set of the season.

The Skinny
The Isles have points in three straight road games (2-0-1)… Including shootout winner, the Isles have scored either 0 goals, or 4+ goals in every game this season …The Isles were shorthanded only twice, and killed both penalties; they have been shorthanded two times or fewer in every game this season (it is the longest streak to start an Islander season since PK opportunities became official in 1977-78).…The Isles were out-shot 35-30; they had been the only team in the NHL to outshoot their opponent in every game this season… Simon Holmstrom played a career-high 20:10, breaking his previous high of 18:56, that was set on Tuesday… The Isles have allowed a tying goal in the final three minutes three times this season but have gone 2-0-1 in those games…The Isles had four defense assists, giving them 14 on the season; the defense has 48.3% of the club's assists, which leads the NHL…A defenseman has earned an assist on the last nine Islander goals (ten assists total)…Brock Nelson's early goal was the first that the Isles scored with Ilya Sorokin in goal in 124:39…Bo Horvat is the 11th player in Isles history with at least four overtime goal; among current Isles only Brock Nelson (8) and Mathew Barzal (5) have more…Nico Hischier's goal tied him for the NHL lead (8) with Nikita Kucherov…The Isles ended four-game point streaks for both Timo Meier and Dougie Hamilton…Oliver Wahlstrom played in his 199th NHL game.

First Time in a Long Time
Nico Hischier (7 of 27) is the first opponent to lose 20 or more faceoffs to the Isles since Sidney Crosby had identical totals on April 2, 2016, at Barclays Center.  Viktor Kozlov (won 11 of 31 on January 12, 2000, in Sunrise, FLA) was the last opponent to do so in an Islander road game.

It is only the 4th time in that span that the Isles have had a 7-game streak at any point; the club record of 15 was set in 2022:
15  1/21/2022 – 2/24/2022

The Skinny: Detroit 1, Isles 0

"The Skinny"

By Eric Hornick

Game 6
Detroit 1, Isles 0
Alex Lyon made 29 saves for this fourth career shutout and Patrick Kane converted Detroit's first shot fort the only goal as the Detroit Red Wings blanked the Isles 1-0 and snapped the New Yorkers' three-game point streak before a crowd of 12,739 at UBS Arena.

The Isles out-shot the Red Wings 29-11 but could not convert on three power plays as they were shut-out for the third time this season (0-2-1).

The Isles are 2-2-2 on the season and head to New Jersey Friday to begin the first back-to-back set of the season.

The Skinny
The Isles power play is 2-19 on the season (2-15 at home); they did manage to kill their first penalty on home ice this season after allowing goals the first three times they were short...Noah Dobson has 17 shots on goal over the last three games; four of his twelve attempts tonight were on goal…Liam Foudy played a team-low 7:52 in his Islander debut…The Isles took only one penalty for the second straight game; they have taken only 11 penalties through the first six games…The Isles have out-shot their opponent in all six games this season; they are the only team in the NHL to do so….It was Ilya Sorokin's first regulation loss in seven games, dating back to last season…The attendance was the lowest in UBS Arena history…This was the 26th time in club history that the Isles have lost 1-0 in regulation, but only the seventh time at home (twice at UBS).

First Times in a Long Time
Detroit defeated the Isles in New York in regulation for the first time since December 19, 2017; the Isles had gone 7-0-1 in the interim.
The Isles allowed only 11 shots; it was only the fourth time in club history that they have allowed 11 or fewer, joining:
3-Mar-77 @ Detroit (11)
16-Feb-08 Vs Atlanta (10)
8-Feb-15 @ Buffalo (10)

The Red Wings blanked the Isles in New York for the first time since Jimmy Howard did so on Black Friday in 2013.
The 11 shots match the fewest in Red Wings history (set March 3, 1977, vs. the Isles), and is only the second time since shots on goal became an official stat in 1959-60 that the Red Wings won a game with 12 shots or fewer (4/1/2004 in St. Louis -12 shots)

For the History Books
It is the first time in Isles' history that they have been shut-out three times in the first six games of a season.

The New Guy
Liam Foudy is the first player other than Josh Bailey to wear #12 in a regular season game since Chris Simon did so on February 23, 2008.

Odd Team?
The Isles have been shutout in the 2nd, 4th, and 6th game of the season.

No Support for Ilya
The Isles have not scored a goal in Ilya Sorokin's last two starts (125:00). Sorokin has allowed only four goals, including one in overtime, in his three starts this season.

Brock-Tober
Brock Nelson has 38 October goals, tying Pat LaFontaine for 5th place in club history (Mike Bossy 80, Bryan Trottier 56, Brent Sutter 46, John Tavares 45).

Overtime is Our Time
The Isles have played 3 overtime games. They are 0-2 in games decided by an overtime goal, and they are 1-0 in shootouts. Ilya Sorokin is 0-1 in overtime and 0-0 in shootouts, while Semyon Varlamov is 0-1 in overtime and 1-0 in shootouts.

Empty Netters
