The Isles announced that Matt Martin has agreed to a one-year deal with the team.
Martin becomes the active NHL leader in hits with 3,854; he is 175 behind former linemate Cal Clutterbuck for the official NHL record (since hits became an official stat). Martin takes the active leader role away from Alex Ovechkin (3,654). His 3,407 hits as an Islander are a club record.
With 75 games remaining in this season, Martin would need to appear in 45 of them to reach the 1,000 NHL game mark.
He starts the day 2nd among active Islanders and 7th-all-time in games played, although Casey Cizikas was poised to tie him tonight:
6. Brock Nelson 847 *** 7. Matt Martin 823 *** 8. Casey Cizikas 822
When he appears in his first game, it will be his 14th season as an Islander, tying Casey Cizikas and Bobby Nystrom. Among skaters, only Denis Potvin, Bryan Trottier, and Josh Bailey appeared in more (all 15 seasons). Billy Smith played in the first 17 Islander seasons.
